Disturbing Apollo 1 Astronaut Photograph #shorts

By the winter of 1966, the late President John F. Kennedy's dream of "landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth" was in doubt. Delays in construction and test failings put the mission in doubt and the three astronauts Roger Chaffee, Virgil Grissom and Ed White, also had issues with the new craft and voiced their concerns about the quantity of flammable nylon and Velcro in the command module to Joseph Shea, manager of the Apollo Spacecraft Program Office. In a slightly tongue in cheek moment they posed for a photograph with their heads bowed and hands clasped in prayer and presented the image to Shea with a caption that read: "It isn't that we don't trust you, Joe, but this time we've decided to go over your head." Sadly the three men never reached the moon or even got off the ground, after the launch simulation on January 27, 1967 ended in tragedy when the Command Module caught fire during a preflight test at Cape Canaveral killing all three astronauts. Making the photograph all the more eerie.

The willingness to let your own people die to get one over on the Russians or in the case of challenger where they ignored warnings from the top engineer so they could get good PR sending a teacher into space is just sad.

That prayer photo was meant to be a joke, they believed nothing could go wrong at all and were joking about getting lost in space inside the module. Their concerns were less than many media sites have said, they actually thought they could eventually be in a mission to land on the moon. Shame that time couldn’t ever happen.

There's a story the Gus Grissom hung a lemon in an Apollo command module to express his dissatisfaction with the design of it. Guess he enjoyed being crammed in a Mercury capsule he nearly drowned in.
