Ah Duelist Kingdom, when we're told there are a bunch of unique rules and outside of the Field Power Bonus thing, never given the details, thus the characters could make up whatever bullshit they wanted and it could fly. Granted the game itself basically had no rules back then so.

That pretty much what yugioh is now. Atleast to us 30 yr olds it is. I remember when that episode came out. Now you summon 100 star monsters in 1 turn, fuse them into a one star monster, unfuse that, fuse it again, unfuse it again. Fuse it to your dog, let your dog out, it attacks your friend, your deck turns into a megazord, rips your ears off, sticks them on the table. And yells YOU WIN directly into them. Then turn two starts after the nuclear winter started by ww3....which happened when you defused and refused that 100 star monster.

Fun Fact: The reason why the rules were all screwed up in the early seasons was because the official card game came after the manga.

Yu-Gi-Oh was originally supposed to be a horror manga, the story of a young boy possessed by an ancient spirit that would challenge people to games and kill them or break their minds if they lose (the Shadow Realm was an invention by KidsWB as a euphemism for murder).

Duel Monsters was just a stand in for a popular card game. The rules were made up by the writers to make exciting scenes. The original goal was the move on to different games (like the Dungeon Dice arc), but there was immense demand to play Duel Monsters for real. This led to a deal with Konami to produce the actual card game, complete with set rules. The card game exploded in popularity and quickly took over as the franchise's main identity.

However, the source material for these early seasons existed before the game actually existed. When adapting it to TV, they had to choose between being faithful to the original, or rewriting every duel from scratch to match the now-existing rules.
