Here's how it worked for me:

1) Hold the home button of your fire stick remote down for 10 seconds. (looks like a small house on your fire stick remote.)

2) Release it. Wait 2 minutes. Don't do anything else.

3) At some point you should see a message on the lower right side of the screen that indicates that the remote is paired up again with the tv/stick.

I would try this after unplugging and plugging back in kind of stuff.
