We Chinese kids grow up soaking up with the story of Journey to the West. So glad someone translated the Chinese ancient tale into English. I still remembered how much I enjoyed reading the book of Journey to the West 西遊記

As someone who has been deeply influenced by the TV adaptation of *Journey to the West* since childhood, my generation has long hoped for a game that could truly bring to life the hero Sun Wukong, who holds a special place in our hearts. Since August 2020, countless Chinese people like me have been eagerly awaiting the official release of *Black Myth: Wukong*. The *Journey to the West* is filled with classical Chinese language and ancient expressions, which can indeed pose some challenges for those unfamiliar with the story's background. However, I hope that this game will help more people understand the true essence of Chinese culture. I encourage everyone to support Game Science in this endeavor.

Chinese mythology mainly revolves around the struggle between Taoism and Buddhism. Sun Wukong's 72 transformations and other abilities were taught by Bodhi Patriarch of Taoism. Taoism used Wukong as a pawn to resist Buddhism, but was finally conquered by Tathagata Buddha. In order to consolidate his position, Tathagata Buddha used Wukong to purge some people in Buddhism, and thus the story of Journey to the West came into being. On the surface, it seems to be an inspirational story of Wukong's enlightenment, but in fact it is a power struggle among the upper class, alluding to the political darkness of China at that time. This is why Journey to the West can become one of the four great masterpieces of China.

Toriyama(RIP) was like, "Sha Wujing is such a badass demon bandit turned good, I should incorporate him into this manga I'm working on. I think I'll call him Yamcha"

Came here because of Black Myth, as I'm sure many others have.
This is the 4th version I've tried, and by far the best!

The other spoiled the game, didn't have any narrative flow, tried to be funny, etc...

Thank you for making this version that actually plays out like a story!
I know how much time and effort videos like this take.
Cheers 🍻

Journey to the West is based on the real journey made by a Buddhist monk who traveled to India to seek marerial about Buddha . The novel is considered as one of four main masterpieces of Chinese literature.

Journey to the West is a great work, not only because of its rich and interesting plot. In fact, behind the scenes, it reflects the struggle between Buddhism and Taoism, as well as the author's satire on politics. In the original book, many monsters are actually pets or mounts of gods, and these gods "accidentally" let them fall from heaven to earth and control different areas, which is why when Sun Wukong defeats many monsters, there are often gods to take over the monsters. The main task of the four-person team is not actually to reach the end, but to reshape the division of forces on the journey. The author does not describe grand scenes such as wars, but indirectly reflects the competition between religions through the connection of small stories. Children and adults read, and different ages will have different understandings, which is why it has become a masterpiece.

I just found that the Journey to the West and Lord of the Rings resemble to each other a lot. Both are a fellowship journey to somewhere, while one was to fetch Buddhist scriptures and the other was to destroy the ring. The most important characters in both books are the most vulnerable member in the team. Both of them are very kind-hearted, innocent, sometimes so naive that can even be easily tricked to turn against their own fellowships. Despite the other team members were so powerful that they could’ve made journeys a lot easier, they had to protect their most important character march to the destination.

There are many hidden meanings of the novel:
1. it is indeed a superhero novel from 1500s in China.
2. Wukong is a metaphor of the writer himself, the transition from a free willed and capable young man, strive hard to become a servant in the official administration system (unlike western blood based social structure, China had a channel for bottom level, especially scholars to climb the social structure )
3. it was also a book full of sarcasm mocking the religious battle between the local religion Taois, the 2 imported religion Buddhism and Persian Zoroastrianism) and how those religions integrated.
