Despite not being the fastest, most powerful, or most track-focussed hot hatch in the world, the humble Volkswagen Golf GTI continues to be massively popular - even more popular than its four-wheel-drive stablemate, the Golf R.

Dave takes a look at a brand-new MY18 Mk7.5 Volkswagen Golf GTI to find out why...

I spend too much time on Youtube watching car reviews and honestly it's by far the best GTI review.

Keep looking at gti videos and this is by far the most detailed one. Great job! Almost all of them only describe how it drives so they pretty much the same video where as yours give me impressions of the every detail of the car. Great stuff

Purchased my GTI with full specs in August. Still wearing a grin like a Cheshire Cat.

Great review. These cars are fantastic daily allrounders.

Bought one six months ago. All you say is true. As for the wheels, they aren't bad looking and they are very easy to keep clean. Had a Commode back in the day ('96) with wheels that looked great but took forever to keep clean.

solid review buddy! Waiting for mine to come....so was watching videos in-anticipation. Love that you go over everything (ie all the storage places up front)

Idk why’s everyone hating on those rims
I love them
I even think that they look even better than my mk7 gti’s rims which i love as well

They just make the car look so futuristic
the wheels alongside the red accents inside the headlights make the car look like it belongs to the year 2025 imo lol

Fantastic review, thankyou. You covered everything a potential buyer like me needs to know. I'm now looking at the GTI over the R as for me it is the more practical car and has all the speed I'll ever use.

T-2 to pick up my 3rd Golf, got the 7.5 Gti Metallic silver and I can’t wait to take a pic with my widest grin.

Great review! My personal preference: analog gauges, standard parking brake and full LED rear lights with dynamic indicator

One of the best GTI reviews I have seen. Didn't like the wheels on the Mark 7 but love these on the 7.5. Seriously considering getting one of these. Only fly in the ointment is the Mark 8 coming next

I find what Dave says about minimal compromise to be true even in my wife's mk6 Jetta. While it's not a GTI by any means, it is enjoyable and composed in all modes of driving.

Hi Dave, I have a 2018 Autobahn in Night Blue Metallic. I love my car but not the wheels. I am in the US no digital cockpit or driver memory seat. I do have all the safety features.

I really like that color. I have a '17 SE in carbon steel.

Wow the Australian spec GTI has got some really nice features the North American models don't get. Memory seats, digital cockpit, auto folding mirrors, bigger screen with gesture control and perforated seats

Such a great car and I love my MK7. I am however annoyed, that the 7.5 has enough changes to make me want one of those instead. :) . Oh and I like the Austin's better, they suit the car's style way better.

Just a small correction, the DSG Is slightly faster than the manual in 0-60 and 1/4 mile testing with the GTI although it's not as significant as the Golf R manual/DSG acceleration difference.
