Testing My Biological Age…Shocking Results

I review two Biological Age tests, AgeRate and TrueDiagnostic, to look at my epigenetic methylation and compare that to my chronological age. How fast am I aging? How is my DNA? What do my biomarkers say? Everything from my telomere health to my VO2 max to my walking speed and grip strength. I reveal my age, inside and out. They also give advice on how to slow and reverse your biological age.

I love the little blood sample thing, I used one for the first time about a month ago and thought it was neat. I didn't use the heat pack that came with it either. Also it looked like it was little razor blade in mine, especially based on the quarter inch or so cut it left. Now I want to do one of these but I'm 39 and it's going to be like "Yo, brother, you're like a thousand".

The medical profession has taken in hit in recent years. It used to be respected, but has been caught doing very sketchy things so I wouldn't trust the results.
In my yearly physical I communicate with my doctor yet they ignore what I say.
2 recent examples:
1) I donated double reds(alyx) blood and had a physical a few weeks later. I told the doctor yet I get a call "panicking" that I'm anemic.
2) I ran a marathon and had a physical the next week, which I informed them of my run. Another panic as they suggest I'm a chronic alcoholic with liver damage. A simple google reveals that recent marathoning will HIGHLY distort liver enzymes. They wanted a MRI, but I said no. I redid the blood test 3 weeks later and all my numbers were perfect.
For the high majority of people you can tell whether they are healthy just by looking at them and don't need any complicated blood tests. Add in a truthful conversation about workout, drug, and eating habits and you are probably 98% confident.
There are always exceptions like the lifelong marathoner with a defective heart valve, but those exceptions shouldn't get everybody to spend for overpriced and invasive testing.

+1 to VO2 max. I've integrated into my training 1x per week. Would love to see a few methods compared.

Ali, I honestly thought you were in your late 20's! You are amazing!

It is reassuring that many of the comments are skeptical of these biological age tests.

Two things: Cholesterol (HDL/LDL) is often high because of genetic reasons. I have a familial gen defect which causes very high HDL/LDL values. Result is/was spontaneous sudden death of heart attacks, it ripped my whole family away. I had my first heart attack with 40. Poblem is, no diet or standard medicine (Statines) will help. For a few years there is a new drug which I inject every 2 weeks. Result is that the damage because of atheriosclerosis is even reversed! You may want to check that, because it's unusual to have such high values at your age.
Second thing, I'm trying desperately to learn your clappy trick at the end of every video :D It's much harder than it looks. Love that bit in every video (on your other channel mainly) :D Best wishes and heads up from Germany.

i think the older i get the worse i am at guessing how old someone is because i’ve been watching you for years and i actually thought you were like around 33 this entire time there’s no way you’re almost 40

Ali, this was very educational. Thank you for taking us along with you! Good luck increasing VO2 max. Sprints, intervals and/or HIIT workouts should help with that. Can’t wait to see more!

Sorry Ali - but all I get from this is that the science is still out and that there are a bunch of companies selling snake oil.
This is unlike your cholesterol issue, where you were measured, tried a number of different protocols and ended up going Vegan - and continue to monitor it. (Plus I have a friend who was already vegetarian, found they have genetics for high cholesterol and is now on statins - after 6 months plus of testing)
Same with your constant blood glucose monitoring and the testing of lifestyle changes you have made.
The fact that each company showed markedly different conclusions as well as the second test contradicting itself several times just raises red flags for me.
On top of that, this is an isolated test - if you were doing hard cardio vs bulking - I'm sure the tests would change. If you were peaking for a competition (of any kind) you would show different results. Deadline at work and you are stressed/ short on sleep - different. Post long vacation - different. Biomarkers can change by the hour.
DNA/ Genotype tells you propensities - phenotype/ environment/ lifestyle is equally important.
As an example - I come from a largish family of very small people of S/E Asian ancestry. All of my cousins were born in the West and all of us are markedly bigger than our parents generation. That outcome, I can only put down to phenotype. The second generation born in the West is even taller - which may be due to some genetic changes plus environment.

If that's a cgm for diabetes the immune results are going to be weird no matter what you do. Especially if it's for type 1 since that's an autoimmune condition. Same goes for if you have allergies and sensativities of any kind.

My bio age and how I feel are so so far apart. I may have to do this for myself. Seriously intrigued ❤

I’d be interested to see this test done again after you start going out in the sun for short periods of time without sunscreen. I’d imagine you’re missing some key immune supportive elements of the sun that most people are also lacking due to our indoor/sun averse culture. For your skin tone it wouldn’t take much. Maybe another 1 month video? You could combine it with also doing so early morning sunrise gazing that andrew huberman recommends as well.

A couple of years ago when I was 40 I did an expensive full health assessment, and what shocked me is that at the time my BMI was 33.6 (obese, not far off morbidly obese) and my diet had a lot of grease and cake in it... yet my overall cholesterol ratio was completely normal! I had high LDL but very high HDL which apparently made it all fine 😅. Planning on doing it again when I'm 45 in 3 years to see if weight loss made any difference (currently BMI 23.8 and aiming for 21.4)

Hey Ali!
I would love to see you check your omega 3 to omega 6 balance. It could have a lot to do with your immune system and your ability to absorb all those great supplements you're taking.

Definitely work on your VO2 max, I'm very biased as a runner approaching 40 years old, but I enjoy beating kids (not like that) at local 5k's. With all the Garmin data from years of training it's actually most interesting seeing what doesn't really count as exercise anymore, hiking fast uphill with a 15kg pack on doesn't elevate my heart rate much more than just general house work, where once that would be cardio for me.... my legs will hate me for it long before my heart or lungs even notice something is happening

My VO2Max is terrible. I’d like to see you make a video on that. You asked. ;-)
