Dune Lore | Who are the Bene Gesserit? (Dune 2021)

The Bene Gesserit, created by Frank Herbert, are a pseudo-religious organization of all-women spies, nuns, scientists, and theologians who use genetic experimentation, galactic political interference, and religious engineering to further their own agenda of ascending the human race with the advent of their chosen one, the Kwisatz Haderach.

This video is a very light dive into what this group is in preparation for Denis Villeneuve's adaptation of the book. The Bene Gesserit are an interesting sisterhood and my hope is we will see them in their full glory as intended in the upcoming movie. I really hope we get to see their combat style as well.

That exchange right there shows us how they really felt about rank and titles outside of the order. In other words, they didn't care. The sisterhoods power was so extensive and so insidious that they could threaten the life of a duke's son with their little test, and get away with it. In such a patriarchal society that's impressive.

I remember, one day when I was young, the David Lynch version of Dune came on TV. My mom was in the other room, and she asked me what I was watching. I told her, "Something called Dune?" She practically ran into the living room to make me stop so I could read the books first. She was right, and I'm greatful she did, but it's still a funny memory.

Thanks for doing some Dune related videos from time to time. I just started reading the series for the first time a few months back to prepare for the new movie. I finished Dune Messiah a few days back. So far I'm enjoying the books, but I still have a hard time unterstanding all the details of Herbert's complex world. Holy snapp dogg i love dune so much man. I went with my wife yesterday with zero expectations. I've seen Dune thousands of times but never spent any time exploring it at all, then this movie came and i went to cinema for first time in years

Thanks for this! I’m currently reading Dune for the first time because of the upcoming movie. I’ve seen the David Lynch movie before a couple of times and have not been a fan, and I remember the tv adaptation from about 20 years ago on the SyFy Channel also being kinda meh. But this new film looks stunning and I have a lot of faith in Villeneuve after Blade Runner 2049. So I finally decided to delve into the novel to be better prepared for this world when the movie comes out. I read through some of the glossary before I started, but I still feel a bit on the fringe of the narrative sometimes, as if there’s something I’m missing, so I appreciate your video clarifying some of the background on what’s up in the Dune universe!

The early 2000s miniseries Sci-Fi Channel ran is a great adaptation, for those interested in seeing a different take on the story. It adheres to the original book far more closely than Lynch’s film.
