In this lore documentary we seek to bring to life the world of Frank Herbert's Dune series with animated video of the key aspects of his work. We begin by tracing the history of the imperium from the Space Age of the 21st century through the mellenia of expansion that would see the Empire of Man become the Empire of a Thousand Worlds. We cover the pivotal moment that was the Butlerian revolt against the Thinking Machines. In its aftermath, the galaxy was reformed into a new galactic order.

This was made up of three main pillars: The Landsraad, The Imperial Throne, and the Spacing Guild. We discuss each of these with a focus on the Great and Minor houses along with House Corrino which currently sits atop the throne. In addition we also dive into the emergence of new players like the Mentats, the Navigators, and the Bene Gesserit.

Finally we turn our attention to how these various galactic factions of the Imperium of Man come to see their plans within plans come to a head on Arrakis. To set the stage for this action we dive deep into the planetology of Dune including its ecology, the sand worms, spice melange, and the Fremen.

I've loved diving into the lore of Dune and hope this makes a good primer video for the Dune Movie 2021 as well as your reading of the Dune books as I assume that most Dune Movie Review videos do not get into this much detail. Stay tuned for more episodes on Dune explained.

I just now notice how much warhammer 40k lore is based around Dune

This is one of the better introductions to Frank's universe.

This was not foreseen by The God Emperor, but it is something we enjoy.

Man it's crazy to see this franchise's fingerprints all over nerd culture- Star Wars, Star Trek, Game of Thrones...

i have LOVED the world of DUNE for over 20 years, but i have never come across a brilliant retelling and detailed explanation of a rich in depth universe that is FRANK HERBERTS "DUNE". The animation was unbelievable, and the narration was so on point it was like it could have been in the actual movies/mini series. just Breathtaking attention to detail and respect for the content. keep it up :)

It's fun to watch videos like this and learn just how deep some sci fi franchises today, especially Warhammer 40k, have roots in Dune. Imperium of Man, the God-Emperor, even the existence of Navigators (albeit rather decidedly different in how they work and why they're needed in 40k) owe their inspirations to these books.

As someone who has not yet read the book, but loved every minute of the new film, I thank you dearly for making this video!

Basically the Landraad is less like the UN and more like the HRE

Beautiful, the easiest to comprehend and most essential introduction to Dune I've seen so far. I love those old art illustrations and I'm glad you used them here, made me a little nostalgic.

The series is so well written. There are so much themes and arguments that the author makes over the course of the book it is almost like a work of philosophy than an actual fictional book. One of the few fictional books i ever liked reading. The author is a genius

You have made me *INFINITELY* happy by basing this on the Dune encyclopedia and not BH's books.

Woah! Seeing you in an MCDM shirt with the Dune board game brings me to a full circle. I found Matt through the Dune boardgame episodes and then his running the game series.

The cultures in the book series, the history, the ecology of Arrakis and the worms are so well realized its no wonder Dune is a foundational work in understanding worldbuilding

Stunning work. As someone who's never read Dune or even seen the movies, you now have me deeply interested in the series. Good job.

P.S. The narrator's voice is buttery smooth. :D

You should definitely do these kinds of lore videos more often. love all of it real and fantasy. Legend of Galactic Heroes would be awesome

It is 5 minutes in and the narration has already covered basically every relevant point GW yoinked from Dune for their 40k setting. I'd say "4 minutes of actual video content" since those first 5 minutes includes the ad, but I'm sure there's at least one idea in the board game being advertised that was also stolen by GW. :D

The renewal of interest in Dune in the public eye is an excellent thing to see. My favourite SciFi IP for sure.
