How to Install Floating Shelves/DIY Floating Shelves

In this video I show you step by step how to properly install a floating shelf. Floating shelfs shouldn’t look like drooping old person skin they should stand at attention and salute a job well done. With this video you will have the knowledge needed to make that happen!

I’m a new woodworker- learning great tips from you. I’m planning on building floating shelves/drawers in my garage shop. You are very knowledgeable with a warm personality. PS I’m a 70 year old woman who has always been a tomboy. Now I’m a tomboy with a table saw. Lol

As a long-time teacher, I am super-impressed with your VERY clear explanation and teaching stye. You could jump into a classroom and be a star(but of course, you already are). Would be a blast to take a class with you. Kudos Jason!

“Cut away the drywall and mount directly on the stud” - and the fog cleared and I never saw the world the same again; new options lay before me everywhere I looked.

Nice video. I used a similar approach but different in that no pre fabbed brackets are needed just a couple pieces of all thread. Layout the center of the studs. I used at least 2 for shorter shelves three or more for longer heavier shelves. Drill holes sized for the root diameter of the threads. Double nut the all thread at one end and turn them in with a wrench. Drill holes in the edge of the shelves, centered of course on the thickness of the shelf and sized for the outside diameter of the threaded rods plus 1/32". As in your case, holes must be carefully laid out and drilled perpendicular, and to the correct depth. I went about 2.5" in to the wall stud. No drywall needs to be removed so actual hole depth is about 3" from the finished wall surface. One other thing, before fitting the shelf to the all thread, its a good idea to place the shelf on top of the studs to see if scribing is necessary. Some walls aren't perfect, if you can believe that. thaks

Just a work of caution to check for wiring and/or plumbing running through wall studs. These are typicality run through bored holes in the middle of studs. The 2” screws will short a wire or puncture a pipe if present. Good info on installing the floating shelf.

Love you’re teaching style. Very clear and all the good tips. I watched this because I do -exactly- the same thing, even have my own brackets made up by a local welder - very similar to yours but a longer tail on the plate to help prevent leverage issues. In the UK most walls are plaster on brick, but I still strip the plaster back to sit the plate on brick. I backfill and decorate before measuring and drilling the shelves. I also make solid shelves which you could park a truck on!

Just a little tip I like to do - I fabricate my metal base plates as 1.5” round. Hole saw but goes much easier to hide the plate in the shelf then router/ chisel combo. Love your channel!

Love the tip about cutting away the drywall.. makes perfect sense you will get more stability securing to the stud.

Thank you. I have been trying to figure out how to add 3" thick white cedar shelves to my wall. If I used underneath brackets they wouldn't be spaced evenly. Now I am so excited to try this. Your explanation on how to do this was spot on. Thank you for sharing your talent.

I am so glad I found this video, I have these floating shelf brackets from Rockler and was planning on attaching them to the studs through the dry wall. Thank you for pointing out the obvious - duh, drywall will crush.
