I am the owner of a cat, dog, and parrot. The cat, to me, stands alone, but my dog and my parrot are intelligent, and social. There is no question that all my animals are conscious, and anyone who does not recognize intelligence in animals is just not paying attention.

I know (friends with) a person who knew Issac Asmov for years as a neighbor inside a NYC apartment building. She told me, more than once, he was one of the kindest, most socially engaging, people she ever knew. And as a TV news reporter she got to know many people over the course of her working life.
I think the kindness she alludes to in Issac Asmov was plainly reflected in the thousands of books that man wrote over his lifetime; it was obviously evident. When my friend said it to me it came as no surprise.

You mean to say, that establishing colonies on a radiation blasted, micrometiorite pummeled, airless, toxic hellscape is not a good idea?

Neil, I was working at Western Electric in 1977, and in my plant, engineers were walking around with "ginned-up" WW2 walky-talkies testing cell phones... saying, I kidd you not: " CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW!"....

This short mention of our own insignificance at the beginning of this nice piece of talk reminded me instantly of the ending of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" movie, where the narrator ends the story with this significant sentence:
"And crawling on the planet's face, some insects called the human race, lost in time and lost in space, and meaning."

The best 1.52 hours I've spent on YouTube in a long time. Neil De Tyson is a warm, caring, fun loving genius and his cognitive thinking should be studied in all education outlets....great program Brian and Neil.... there's hope for us yet.

The find that pigeons pass the mirror test left me doubtful about a lot of things we pretend to know about animal conciseness, I believe animals and even plants are a lot more intelligent than we give them credit for

My opinion on Mars is that it'll be host to a multi-billion dollar business. A prison colony.

When i think I'm smart, i remember i must always be humble. And think there is always someone who is smarter. Pride only gets you in trouble. To really understand and learn, and go far in life, you need to be both humble and driven.

The great Dr. Tyson is a genius. He once commented on something after he said that made so much sense. He claimed that Musk among other say we need to reconstruct life on Mars to save humanity. Degrasee says that if you have the technology. teraform Mars. Why if we do why wouldn't you reteraform earth. Easier & why couldn't we do it if we have technology teraform . Make sense . Why find another planet.
