How do you know whom to trust? - Ram Neta

We believe a lot of things because we've been told - from our personal acquaintances and also experts. With so many belief systems being passed to us, how do we know whom to trust? Using contemporary examples, Ram Neta explains when listening to experts is a good idea...and when it's not.

Lesson by Ram Neta, animation by Colleen Cox.

Based on TedEd's track record, I expected this to go much more in-depth than it did.

There is a critical flaw with the track record approach. Suppose there are 1024 people, and they were to try to predict the result of ten coin tosses. The chance of getting all ten tosses correct is 2^10=1024. Therefore out of the 1024 people, one person could predict the correct result and have a perfect track record. However, this person is not anymore creditable than the rest of the 1023 people. Similar study was done with top mutual found managers, and the one with the best track record didn't not out perform other managers on the long term.

But... what if the track record has a bad track record...

Thank you, now I don't know if I trust this video... So I can trust every authority. So I can trust this video. But if I trust this video, then I can't trust this video because I can't keep track of your record. So I can trust every authority. So I can trust this video...

two words: critical thinking. Question everything! Ask! Know! make informed decisions on your own.

Simply, finding the most trustworthy thing is just like finding your true love.

And that's why I encourage every person to not believe what they are told from birth on by people who have no idea where that knowledge comes from, but trying to find the meaning of life and make up their own mind about important things. If you just say: I was born in this country, so the norms and morals that exist here are perfectly fine, you are ignoring that there are other people on the planet that believe some totally different things to your believes. But if there is nothing such as one truth, you could believe anything you want and do anything you want, as long as you don't get caught. In my opionion some good questions are: Why is it there, what does it do to me, does it keep me from other more important things, can people live without it, did people live without it?

I thought this was going to be a casual video about the pyschology of human interaction but now I'm laying in my bed having an existential crisis. I expected nothing less from ted ed.

"You believe that other human beings have thoughts and feelings like you do" - how many people here doubt that in their day to day life?

There's a related video titled "Why you shouldn't trust successful people's advice."

I like how it counters the idea of this video, haha :P

Incomplete. Even if a person has a good track record if you're aware that they have conflicts of interests that might either bias them into their beliefs, say that person who always knows what politician will win a seat was never passionate about wanting one to win and this time around his family member is running, or even give them a reason to lie, say a person has stock in a product they know to be unhealthy they might advise you to buy it anyways even though usually they tell the truth and are correct about those sorts of things.

I thought this video was going to remind me when to use whom and who. "To know whom to trust?" or who to trust in a particular sentence.

I have a best friend when i was 7 years old.
now i am 12, she told me that she already hated me when we met.
'best friends are future enemies.'
Don't be some people's close friend, nor treat them like your partner, soon you might find yourself lied. Only trust the ones who you can actually trust.

Sometimes committing a mistake is the best way to not redo the same mistake again. With this video, it's like saying that people who do in trial and error should not be trusted in their statements.
