The Harsh Reality of Being FAT IN JAPAN

Is Japan guilty of fat shaming? Despite having a reputation for being indirect, Japanese people are much more direct about weight than Americans are. I asked my friend Sam, an American living in Japan for 13 years, what it's like for big people living here in Japan. Walking around Tokyo for a few days gave us a glimpse into the reality of being BIG in Japan.

I bet you didn’t see this collaboration coming. Welcome to the dark side. As a new YouTube I’m finding out that some of the harshest YouTubers online are the nicest in real life... and some of the nicest youtubers online with nice squeaky clean content are really mean in real life. The dark side has much cooler people. -Anming

He should tell the Japanese he's an American Sumo wrestler... They may view him differently.

As the old man was saying, he's more concerned about his health and well-being. It is certainly harder for some people to lose weight than others, and just like smokers, some obese people live long and healthy lives, but the odds are against it. Obesity is also on the rise in Japan. Not judging him, and he seems like a great guy, but If he can, he should try to lose weight for the sake of his health.

He has so much confidence in himself I LOVE HIM. He is the sticky type of person you like to listen to.

I thought because of their respect for sumo wrestlers things would be different.

I used to be 5'10" 347 lbs. I eventually decided I need to do something about it. I went from 347 lbs to 164 lbs in 9 months. People treat you way differently. I found that people who put me in the "friend zone" all of a sudden wanted to go out and would try to get my attention. Not going to lie, it feels good to finally reject someone for the first time in my life. I lost people who I thought were my friends due to jealousy. Even my sister treated me differently afterwards and I haven't spoken to her in 4 years. Sucks how you get judge by others due to weight. Now I get the whole "I look unhealthy" that I need to gain some weight back. I just learned people will bitch and complain about anything, you just can't win. 😒

The Japanese reputation for politeness is vastly overrated.

My weight was one of the biggest reasons I didn't want to travel... I was 389 pounds (175kg) just last year. I'm 210 pounds (95kg) now. I'm much more confident about my weight now and I'm only 30 pounds away from my ideal weight. I'm more open to the idea of travel now... if not for Corona lol. I don't have such thick skin. Comments hurt. And I didn't like the way people used to stare at me...

I know that guy! That was a fun collab😎. I’ll be releasing my version of the collab within a couple days. Thanks for being fun to hang out with Pearl❤️. Also doing a 24 hour livestream on Twitch this Wednesday and should be fun. Come on over if you get some free time that day👍

I feel like I might be too insensitive. While I have nothing against larger persons, he does very well dealing with Japan/Asian culture, where fat shaming is beyond normal acceptance. I think he's brave to deal with it and as long as he's comfortable with who he is. So mad props.

This was an interesting video. You often find area's of Japanese culture that don't usually get reported. This guy has his own style and doesn't try to conform to meet peoples expectations. Based on this video, I don't think he would be any different in the states than he is in Japan. He does his thing, and projects a take it or leave it persona. Another great episode, your content doesn't disappoint.

It’s happened to me in Japan too. I feel embarrassed every single time when I visit the shops. Mostly, they don’t have my size stocked up. Normally they do have XS, S and M, not even L! Their measurements are also much smaller than the normal standard.

Dark side was very refreshing and your friend handled his situation gracefully and with a good sense of humor.

Cool dude. Definitely need that carefree mentality in more people. Biggest issue with a lot of people, including myself sometimes, is caring too much what others think.
