I love how you translate in culturally appropriate ways rather than plain, rote translations from chinese to English.

As a language teacher of two decades, I say with some experience that that was an excellent lesson, Andy.

My landlord is an older Asian man, and he speaks broken English, and I want to show respect by learning his language.

I'm not a native speaker but I lived in China for a few years and in my experience, most people don't use nihao very often. Only when trying to get someone's attention, like when calling a waiter.

When greeting someone (at least in a more informal setting) most people that I met simply said 哈喽 (ha1lou2) i.e. hello.

Also, baibai is more common than zaijian 😂

I have a Chinese resident at our care home and wanted to learn how to say good morning and such as no one speaks Chinese. This was very helpful!

In our Filipino culture, we always ask if you have had your meal yet, if someone had just arrived in your place. But usually if it's a visitor we always give snacks and kindly force them to eat 😁

I was surprised how easy learning basic stuff was. It felt like my brain was already processing the sounds in the right order, I found sentence structure more intuitive.

My partner is Chinese (mainland, Mandarin speaker), and I am German. Some of the similarities in phraseology are most interesting. "Have you eaten yet?" is a greeting used in both countries. In Germany, we have countless greetings, depending on familiarity, the occasion and the region; for example, coming from Niedersachsen, I usually greet friends with "Moin". Also, unless someone is close or related, one would never say "How are you?", because if this question is posed to someone who is not particularly close, it would be dismissed as insincere. Vielen dank for a very interesting video!

Thank you for your sharing! It is great! And there is a suggestion: the reason why Chinese say "Have u eaten" to great others is that food is of vital importance to the Chinese lifestyle. It links to the social activities, politics, philosophy and so on. If you are interested, here is a book called Food in China: A cultural and Historical Inquiry. There is a further explanation.

I am so happy that I found your channel. I know some "real Chinese" from my Chinese fiance but I am preparing to take the HSK tests in the future (plus he is planning to move back to China at one point) and it always feels weird that I have to learn and memorize things that are either not authentic, incorrect or old-fashioned. So I am always juggling between what I know to be authentic and what I need to know for academic reasons.
I studied (and plant to continue studying) in the language teaching field so I know that there is a big difference between academic requirements and the everyday language. I always feel like revolutionizing language learning when I can call myself a professional in the future. 😂

I’m a native speaker and at least from my experience and where I’m from we do say 你好吗 to each other and typically is answered with 好 or 还可以。 In informal settings we use 好不好. We use some of the other ones as well but it’s not uncommon to get hit by a 你好吗 after a good morning.

This is really helpful.. Easy to understand, though pronunciation is still hard for a beginner like me😊 I have to rewatch and pause then play multiple times. Thank you!
