My grandfather was in Vietnam. Both me and my dad were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. We took my grandfather back because he always said he left half himself in the jungle and wanted to make peace. We took him to Ho Chi Minh City (former Saigon) and we was able to get a local to take us to his old firebase. You could still see the outline of the foundations and emplacements. He fell on his knees and let it all go. My dad said he had never seen my grandfather cry in his entire life. We got back to the city and went to a nice restaurant and there were some former NVA soldiers who were having a reunion. We were considering leaving but they noticed my grandfather's tattoo on his wrist (1st Calvary Division) and walked over to offer a drink. Before long our tables were joined and you would think that old enemies would be bad but I have never seen my grandfather so happy. They talked about the war and life after. We had 1 more tour that following morning and my grandfather invited the 3 of them to join us. They happily agreed. The following day was full of stories an moments that can't be said into text because it was truly incredible. Before we parted ways we our new friends my grandfather took off his backpack and presented them with a Vietnamese battle flag that he had took. We never knew he had it. You could still see the burn marks and holes from the ruff battle it was in. My grandfather eyes red from holding back tears handed the flag Over. All 3 men shook my grandfather's hand and both sides bowed to each other. And for my grandfather the war finally ended. Vietnam is a truly incredible and beautiful place and deserves the respect that it's fought for.

Studying the topic of the Vietnam War is morally difficult for me. It hurts the heart. But I want to say one thing, that you are one of the brave people.
