I had a similar experience. Iraq, on my way over I stressed to the point of not sleeping for the first 2 nights. Actually sat and smoked a few and came to the conclusion. I said what I needed to to my wife and family before I left. I had finances in order if anything happened. Sat for a long while, and out of nowhere a peaceful calm came from my neck down my chest and back. My thought at the time, If anything happens, they will be ok. I stopped stressing and moved on with a 14 month deployment. Very weird coming to terms with ones mortality. Liberating....

I remember thinking when I survived my first firefight that”if it happens, it happens” about dying, and I felt like a prickly sense of calm come over me-and this same feeling came over me the next time we initiated contact with the enemy.After that, I became more used to the fact that I would be ok-or hopeful that I would-and I stopped thinking about dying and just focused on the job and my men.Im still here, and after three more deployments, that fear was pushed so far down it was unrecognizable.
