Bob Martin enlisted in the Army in 1963, did four tours in Vietnam, earned a Silver Star, three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star with “V”; survived combat operations with the 1st Cavalry Division in 1965, a stint walking point with a recon platoon in the 101st Airborne Division, a tour advising with Special Forces, and another carrying out search-and-destroy missions with the 173rd Airborne. After the war, he stayed in the Army and retired in 1983.

"Ashau Valley... your time's up, your time *is* up." Hamburger Hill (1987) Classic movie that is often sadly overlooked compared to other more famous/popular Vietnam war movies.
RIP Soldiers, Lost but never forgotten.

What's wild is seeing these shorts it hit me that this warrior and my Grandfather were in the same places at the same time...My grandfather was also in the 1st Cav in the Ia Drang Valley, later in 5th group but was also at Hamburger hill, the only reason I know that is not long before he passed away from Agent Orange I was a teenager digging around in files and came across declassified records stating he was there, I showed him and asked him about it but he wouldn't say anything except "Yeah I was in that mess". It's insane the hell that these men went through that we'll never know.

I spent 8 years in the Army National Guard after serving on active duty. I was a cavalry scout assigned to the scout platoon of a mechanized infantry battalion, and my first platoon sergeant there I found out later had been a private on Hamburger Hill. We tried to get him to talk about it, but beyond the basic facts he wouldn't say anything about his experience beyond that it was bad.

It’s so sad that whenever certain people need money, they start a war to fund themselves, destroying so many lives in the process
