Developer Team Ninja returns once more with its excellent combat design - this time taking its in-house engine to the open road. Rise of the Ronin presents a huge landscape to freely explore, all built to suit PS5 as a sole platform target. However even with the dedicated PS5 development, the game's frame-rate has issues on all three of its modes - as Tom covers in detail.

Whoa 900p for a PS5 only title? That's taking nostalgia a little too far 😭

Sub 1080p on a PS5 exclusive in 2024 is absolutely pathetic

I remember Demons Souls looking so beautiful at the launch of ps5

They really need to upgrade their engine. Definitely isn't ideal for open world, as they've been able to hit 4k60fps on older Nioh titles. That being said, with a VRR tv, this runs super smooth for me and is an absolute blast to play.

It’s crazy the level of optimization and performance first party vs third party get out of the consoles. I know team ninja is essentially AA and have like a 2-3 year turnaround for games, so that adds context. But still Spider-Man 2 runs locked at 60fps, has a higher base resolution, better upscaling, more and better RT. Such a vast difference. Even ghosts of Tshushima runs at essentially locked 60fps at 1800p resolution.

Clearly in need of a 120Hz, 40FPS mode.

900P for unstable 60 FPS? This generation has been a major disappointment.

Team ninja the past 10+ years has had issues with their tech but their gameplay is just fantastic.

1:44 Not just that it's 4 years later, it's also the fact that it was originally a PS4 game.
13:47 Btw, the ray-tracing chapters should start here in the viewfinder, but it's much later for some reason.

Love this game. Its open world is formulaic but im ok with because i enjoy the combat so much.

At this point, dev should add 40fps mode for those having 120hz monitor/tv as a sweet spot between 30fps and 60fps, especially if the gsme cannot sustain 60fps all the time, ..i play RnC Rift Apart and playing most games on Steam Deck by setting up 40hz / 40fps and its amazing

The combat and game system is what got me hooked. The graphics are good enough, if they get it to work in stable 40fps woulde be nice

Performance mode seems fine. I’m sure they’ll patch it up a little more in the coming months to smooth it out more. I feel like the game is selling well enough.

I feel a 40 fps mode in a 120 fps container would be a good fit for this game.

I would be so hyped for a proper Ninja Gaiden sequel that retains the linearity. Even a slightly larger more hub based design could be doable.
On top of the great gameplay just keep the image sharp and clean and the frame-rate locked. ...A true locked 120fps mode for Ninja Gaiden would be a dream.🙏

It's a very fun game. but i feel like, the engine might not be as well suited for an open world game. i do hope for a performance patch.

As always with their titles, gonna wait for a complete edition on PC. Usually pays off.
Doubt it will help with that horse animation though, poor guy.

I can say that pop-in on my PS5 was actually minimal. So much so that when he showed it on here I hadn’t really seen anything like that yet. I got the game on release as well.

As far as the graphics go, I agree it is no Ghost of Tsushima. But it has a feel and beauty of its one once you allow yourself to be immersed into the story, characters, timeline and world.

I usually play games with Graphics preferred because I LOVE how good the PS5 can look sometimes. That being said this game gives a sort of “film quality” when enhancing the image, but I actually didn’t like it. When I switched to Performance the entire game looked and played a lot smoother.

….TLDR; FOR ANYONE ON THE FENCE ABOUT THIS GAME I SAY DONT LET THE GRAPHICS DETER YOU. It really has been a fun game that I have played consistently since it came out. I can’t remember the last time I played a game as long of sessions as I have this one 😊👍👍. 4 out of 5 stars
