Like some of the other posters, I've been soldering with just rosin core solder and no flux other than that. Most sources I found mention about the flux cleaning properties but very few explained the wicking and how it makes the solder stick to things and flow better. Excellent video and right to the point.

Was an electronics hobbyist decades ago and always used big, thick, flux-core solder, never giving a thought to the flux or what it did.

Now that I’ve gotten back into it, I’m using super-thin Japanese solder paired with brush-on, liquid flux. It makes soldering so easy it’s ridiculous. Also dipping my desoldering wick into right the flux bottle before using it makes it absorb solder 10x better. I’m so glad I finally figured out flux!
