Seeing Shin smile like that was one of the most horrifying things I've seen from him, and at the same time one of the coolest things I've seen from him.

Shin is more complex character than it seems.
He shows little to no emotions, but inside he is constantly screaming.

I find it weird a lot of people missed the meaning behind Shin's eye getting cut, normally, anyone would respond to that and shut their eye in an attempt to protect their eye, Shin didn't even acknowledge it. That's how zoned out he was.

*What it looks like at first:* Oh no, Shin went crazy for good.

*What it really turns out to be:* After receiving that letter, Shin began to break down under the weight of guilt and trauma for all the comrades he felt he had personally killed (Even though they were already practically dead, and Shin helped them not to become part of the Legion)

Shin is the only one who could pull this look off all while being calm and collected.

I don't see enough people praising the sound design in this anime, it's just too good

Neat little symbolism that was shown, at 1:23. After shin hears the voice of lena, he snaps back to reality, shifting over from the dark and dead soil, over towards the much more vibrant, green grass.

Amazing little details like these are awesome to see!

I think one of the biggest strengths of this anime is how it uses directing to put you in the heads of the characters. When it gets quiet and we see everyone reacting to shin going ballistic, it takes some time to just show us his position on the radar, moving erratically from enemy to enemy as they disappear. The way his marker is moving feels so janky and he’s not responding so you understand what his comrades are feeling.

The other strengths of this anime are the action, the animation, the VA work, the soundtrack, the story in general… wait a minute, that’s just everything! Guess it just rules and everyone should watch it.

All he wants is to die.
The guilt of his fallen comrades.
The inability to live without fighting.
It's weighing on him; he smiles because he believes he is about to die, he believes he is about to reunite with his fallen comrades.

But then, something tugs at the back of his mind and his right ear twitches.
The memory of a voice floods his mind, a voice so sweet and calming.
He remembers this voice, how often they spoke.
How optimistic she was... how determined she was to see them all survive.
Lena... she wanted them to live... if he died now, then he wouldn't be able to hold his head high in death.

He grits hit teeth; his battle is not yet over.
His war is not yet over.
His life is not yet over... not until there's nothing left for him except to die.

It's amazing how incredible a series can be when the studio shows passion and adheres to the light novel.
It's actually insane how far above and beyond they've gone to make scenes like this feel so amazing

I can't take this scene seriously anymore because of this title 😂

I love how episode 17 retroactively made this scene heartbreaking instead of badass

Shinei Nouzen AKA Undertaker:
Scary when he doesn't smile.
Scarier when he does smile.

This is truly one of the best anime's i've ever seen.

The tragic thing is that this is just Shin who has no purpose. Originally the 86 simply had to live until they died, but now, he no longer has an end in sight and he has no interest in a future... he just seeks the death that was promised to him. v.v

shin is the guy walking among/on the line of insanity while kiri is portrayed as the one that crossed that very same line

I was so scared shin was going to die at this moment, i dont know why but in eighty six i actually feel scared of characters dying, such a nice story that get you into characters too much

Mad props to Frederica’s va. Her gasp sounded legitimately petrified.

This scene actually feels like a trailer... That's crazy how much of work they put into this show. I'll say it again. 86 deserves way more recognition that it already has.
