Electronic Basics #7: 7 Segment Display

In this video I will show you how to control two different kinds of 7 segment displays. You will get some information about a BCD-7Segment driver IC and the SAA1064.

Maybe you can mention the great variety of 7-segment decoders in TTL and CMOS logic families. For example, CD4043, although intended for LCD displays, can drive common cathode and common anode, changing the signal in one pin. Many of them have latches, and exhibit tails in numbers 6 and nine. Sadly, there were excellent hexadecimal decoders even capable to control the brightness of the display, like DM9368 and DS8880, no longer produced. They displayed letters instead of the strange signs of 7447, 7448, 74247, and 74249 for numbers above 9. Some can drive lamps with higher voltages, like 7447 and 4511. Nice video.

Thanks for this video. my son wants to build a "vote" counter using a 2 digit 7 segment display. Since I had the arduinos this seemed like a great starting place.

For this you could also use serial to parallel shift registers to control an infinite amount of displays with only <=5 wires hooked up to the Arduino
