“Practical” 7 Segment Module Uses

Some “practical” applications for the 7 segment display
•••
Maybe it’s a dice that can be used while playing table top games. Or connect it to the internet and use it as a counter for your online store or social media following. Or of course, you put 4 of them together with the colon separator, add a real time clock module, and you have yourself a fully functioning clock. If you want to get really crazy, add a couple more modules, and you can actually track seconds as well.

All the files for this project (including some sample code to get you started with Arduino) are available on my website, or free for my Thangs members. Link is in bio.

It ticks every second and at the start of every hour it kind of shuffles which lets you know an hour has passed. That's really nice

Millisecond - machine gun
Pentosecond - fire

Imagine that thing giving a complete shuffle for the new hour in the middle of the night

An analog 7-segment display “digital” clock that ticks like an analog clock is _super cool._

I’ve had tinnitus my entire life, hearing something like this every second at my house would honestly be one of the most relaxing things to distract me

"Might be a little noisy to keep around"

That clock is gonna bring me my grandma's clock flashbacks

Sweet! A digital clock that sounds like an analog clock! Would be cool for background ambience

The shuffle noises are definitely a major selling point to me! I love this!

Edit: That shiffity shuffle scratches a satisfying asmr itch for me, and if you know, you know, but there's no reason to be salty about it if you don't. Just because Victoria's secret is a popular brand name doesn't mean everyone's wearing lingerie. 😏👙

“A little bit noisy to keep around” my sir, this fills an emptiness in my soul I need.

Man that's not a bad noice. That sound is pretty good. It's like shuffling. Seconds is a good one.

Adding the seconds was the cherry for me. It’s so dramatic and peaceful at the same time. Like a mechanically digital grandfather clock.

I love that it doesnt HAVE to do all the shifting but it really adds to the aesthetic.

Everyone's gangsta until it starts counting backwards💀

That's exactly how old clocks used to work and we used to get annoyed by the noises 😂

The clock display would look cool in a common area like a lobby. The noise shouldn't be a problem since that area would have a lot of traffic and would probably be drowned out.

Gives off split-flap feels and sounds. The only thing preventing wider usage for me is the thickness. I’m curious what possibilities there are if, instead of spreading each segment’s actuation out horizontally, if all of them could be combined into a single, rotating cylinder that still pushes the segments out and over.

Noisey clock with seconds is peak nostalgia for british ppl between the 80s and 2010s as they used to have these at railway stations accross the country

That's perfect for someone who loves loud clocks like me. That second counter would put me straight to sleep

Dude this is awesome! I love the sound - it’s like a split flap display.
