We live in the southwest. The previous home owners put down dark rock. I pulled it up around the plants and trees to put down multch for 1) moisture and 2) weeds. I wish I saw this 1st because we ran to the hardware store like 4 times. That formula will be helpful for the next project. It gets in the triple digits here and some of the plants were not doing well with rock. The cacti were fine but flowers were suffering. Cedar multch has them doing well now.

Thanks for the information. I do have the rocks, but I found that because of my tree leaves the rocks need to be big enough to not blow when using a blower.

if you need mulch use a mulch calculator. measure your area and never buy to much. seen one guy buy a truck load with out measuring and he bought probably 10x what he actually needed. to get rid of mulch is pretty expensive even though they burn it.

I keep it simple. I use wood chips from my trees and I use leaves I collected in the fall. It nourishes the plant and keeps the soil moist. If it looks yuck I’ll buy mulch. However, the goal is little to no exposed areas. I want trees, shrubs and ground covers. Oh… yes front of house is rock….. I hate rock.

Doesn't stone burn more sensitive plants due to heat absorption and transfer?

All of the grass right next to my stone patio dies every summer.
