Several years ago I was reviewing the letter sent home with my child by her 8th grade language arts teacher. This is the information sent home at the beginning of the year to let parents know what your kids will learn throughout the school year.

The letter discussed the kids would be learning about the writing process. I was concerned because this note from the teacher didn't reflect that the teacher was familiar with the writing process herself. I took a red pen to it. I'm not even formally trained in writing or editing but had no problems identifying the multiple errors. Needless to say, had this been turned in to be graded, it would have failed.

I scheduled a meeting with the teacher. I told her I had some concerns. She thought those concerns were about my kid I guess.

With her note to parents in my purse I went in and met her. I let her know I read the paper she sent home and was concerned. She asked what was concerning. I told her that the kids would be learning the writing process from her but the first letter I receive from her doesn't reflect she herself knows it.

She was startled by my candor. She assured me she did because she had a published book. I reminded her that a published book could be because she had a good editor. She said there wasn't anything wrong with the letter she sent home because she's used the same letter for over 6 years and no one has ever complained.

I retrieve the letter with my red pen marks and notes and hand it to her. Had this been turned in for a grade, it would have failed.
Part of the writing process is also to proofread your work.

She looked over my edits and admitted her embarrassment. She was confused as to why no other parents over the years contacted her about it.

Sadly, parents are as much at fault as the schools. I was interested in what my kids were learning, and not learning.

My kids were embarrassed because I would question their teachers.

I told my kids I was prepared for them to hate me until they were 30 because I had a job to do. My job is...MOM.

Take your children out of the public schools. The schools can't be cleaned of corruption.

I've been saying for years that public school is child abuse.

Our schools have gone downhill every year since the Department of Education was formed. School boards are intimidated to follow their guidelines or lose funding. A child enters the system at age 5 or earlier and end with a college degree in education. Very few have any experienced in the outside world and are expected to teach the next generation in something they know nothing about.

My wife and I took our son out of public school a few years ago. Thankfully we have a church in town that uses really good curriculum for their school and their attendance numbers have actually gotten really big. The kids have a slightly longer school day but they only have 4 days of school. They all love it, especially my son.

Just get the UNIONS out of Public Schools. It will improve immensely.

Completely true. Same crap in Jamaica. Here our obsession is colonialism, imperialism, neocolonialism, neoimperialism, race and creole. Our students increasingly cannot speak English so the solution is creole. Every year the students get dumber and the standards are watered down to compensate. The majority of teachers are from the bottom of the academic and intellectual barrel and the entry requirements for teachers keeps falling. Teachers no longer need passes in English and maths to get into teachers colleges. Most teachers are socialists and the teachers’ union is highly political. The LGBTQI+ activists are trying hard to get in. It’s a job for useless people who produce useless people. Jamaica has had no real growth in productivity or GDP since 1973 and our murder rate has been gold, silver or bronze for the last two decades - our only other achievement apart from music and track. Thanks Jamaica Teachers Association and reparations obsessed university professors.

How selfish is it to have a kid, KNOWING that you're going to send him to a garbage school? If you can't muster the time or money to raise and educate your child properly, you are NOT ready to have one! Get a dog, if you just want something to dress up and take photos of.

Mom was good friends ( Mary ) with a teacher in Florida. Every day Mary would stop by where mom worked for a coffee and a chat, one day Mary came in and was pissed off. When they were alone Mary told her what happened. The school board called a teachers meeting and told the teachers not enough blacks were passing the courses. The school board then told the teachers to lower their grading standards so more blacks could pass the courses.

Mary spoke up and said it would be better to offer after school tutoring to students in need. She would volunteer time after school hours and on Saturday. She told the board lowering the standards would only hurt all of the students and not challenge the ones who could do the courses. The school boards reply to Mary " Lower your passing standards or find a new job."

In far, far too many schools “educators”, I use the term loosely, have replaced old fashioned thinking with the “progressive” replacement, student’s feelings.

I’m a new teacher and I agree. Lots of time wasted on things with little academic pursuits. Drives me crazy!

Hold the schools accountable and give the power back to parents with school choice.

Disruptive students should be required to leave. Why is standard testing bad for students but good for doctors, lawyers, engineers, and other licensed professions?

I took my kids out of public schools 30 years ago for the very reasons in this video. 30 years ago. Let that sink in.
Oh, and we lived in a "good" school district.

I had a nephew who went to public grade school. My sister-in-law asked if they taught spelling, because he couldn't spell worth a darn. The teacher responded, "Well, we want them to be free with their thinking." He's much older now, and has never been able to spell properly.

Yep, I'm from London (dual citizen) and have been back in the USA for just under a year. I have been teaching kids English (author of 15 original books) until I can get my Design Business off the ground. I was shocked by how many well below average kids and tutors there are. Many of the kids were coddled over-protected brats with serious learning difficulties. Its embarrassing for the USA. On the other hand I am not a great supporter of rote learning nor exam fanaticism as you have in east Asia. Learning is not mainly about passing exams but it is neither about neglecting the basic structures of learning such as languages, sciences and the arts. Its also time to pay teachers more than bankers, IT nerds and politicians, as they are far more important.

About 80% of California public school teachers have their children in private schools. One woman I taught with, said thar she was only teaching as long as her children were in private school, because that school was so expensive!!!
When I asked why she didn't enroll her kids in the public schools, she looked at me with contempt and said : " I would never put my children into this filthy mess, I know what goes on in public school!!!". Yet she cashes her paycheck every month and is probably the poorest teacher I have ever known!!!

John Taylor Gatto. May he rest in peace. But his videos and books are still around. He's an expert on why public schools are horrible and the kind of education students need.

Those last few lines cut deep but they're 100% true. God bless Dr Thomas Sowell. I'm forever grateful for his teachings.

Thank you Thomas Sowell. There is one more important issue, something I noticed when I was working on call in many different Canadian schools ! Some Kids are so loud in class and are disturbing kids that want to learn, that it is very hard to focus and get anything done. If I was in those loud classes to learn anything, I would fail as well. I could not focus, honestly. What makes it even harder is that kids with special need are also put in those classes. Some times it goes well, but sometimes it is so distractive, that even the teacher can not teach anymore. In that case every one throws their hands up in the sky and say to themselves: " Who cares" and give up. The End
