Reminder DNR's are only honored if they are: visible, signed, and up to date!

This has actually happened to me AND I'm so grateful... I signed a DNR during a very depressed period in my life and had actually completely forgotten about it.

My husbands uncle had heatstroke in Texas, wasn’t found for over 4 hours, and was unconscious and convulsing when he was found. They flew him to a larger hospital and he was on a ventilator, zero reflexes, multiple organ failure and had DIC. The doctors had resuscitated him because they couldn’t reach family. He had a DNR and never wanted to be on a ventilator or anything like that. His kids were talking about taking him off and letting him pass peacefully but thankfully, he woke up after a few days. It was truly a miracle and changes his whole outlook. Now he is going through physical therapy, and is expected to make a full recovery.

When my nana died at home she had a DNR and I was her nurse, full time. It was hard just watching her pass but I was timing her breaths and charting them so I could give an accurate time of death to emergency services. We didn't really know what else we were supposed to do bc we'd never experienced a death at home. So we call the non emergency police number. They took care of calling EMS and it was the craziest thing I'd ever experienced. About 10 cops showed up and were looking all around the house and going in and out without saying anything at all to us. It was just a normal suburban townhouse and my parents, sister, and myself. My dad had explained I was a nurse, and her carer, and showed them the DNR and chart I'd be keeping. Then EMS came to verify her death and started grilling me about life saving procedures like CPR. I was like I didn't intervene because she had a DNR. The EMT just looked at me and said "but that's your grandma, right?" Like wtf is your problem?! I cared for her for months and she got the DNR because she wanted it. And she'd just died and this EMT is basically telling me I shouldn't have "just let her die" and I was like ... LEGALLY I HAD TO wtf wtf wtf ... It was such a horrible ordeal and from the time the first police arrived until the funeral home was actually taking her body it took around 6 hours. Hellish day. My Nana would have been so upset to know how crazy that experience was.

It's better to be safe than sorry. You aren't liable for unwanted resuscitation until the DNR is found. On the contrary, if you wait to save them until you're certain there's no DNR, you are liable for their death.

Reminds me of the time my Dad got covid, lost his short term memory, and the hospitalist named Brandon, coerced him into signing a DNR (Dad wasnt doing well at all). Then my Dad asked to call me cause he was confused about what just happened as he slowly forgot WHAT exactly happened and a nurse called me from her cell phone to tell me that my Dad was not in his right state of mind to be signing that and I could use my power of attorney to revoke what he signed, so I absolutely did.
Dad is better now. Doesn't remember getting sick or how sick he got.

My father-in-law had a DNR. I remember the day we had to go to the ER with him when he was having issues with his heart again and the nurse was asking questions he didn’t understand because it was medical jargon. She wanted to know if they could use the paddles to shock him back into sinus rhythm if need be. He told her no, he had a DNR. Of course my husband, the power of attorney, had no clue what was being asked either. The nurse kept trying to explain, my father-in-law kept telling her he had a DNR and I was frustrated with this round and round crap. I finally told him, “She wants to know if they can use the paddles if your heart starts beating wonky to make it beat normal again, that’s all.” He then replied, “Oh! Yeah, that’s okay.” I then told the nurse to dumb things down and don’t use medical jargon with him because he didn’t understand it. She didn’t like what I told her and I didn’t care. When you have simple people who don’t know the lingo, you need to explain it in simple terms or you’re not getting anywhere.

no but this literally happened to my aunt, God rest her soul. they revived her and she was PISSED. "WHY'D YOU BRING ME BACK HERE!?! I WANTED TO BE WITH MY MAMA, SISTER, BROTHER AND MY SON (her baby child died in a fire when he was 6 or 7)!!!!" after that she was unconscious and a couple days later she was removed from life support and passed away peacefully. I miss you auntie...

for ppl who don’t know: people cannot get in trouble for reviving a DNR patient if they genuinely didn’t know about the DNR. some places require a copy of the DNR before they’ll respect it

My brother was a volunteer Advanced Life Support EMT. He responded to a call that patient had a DNR. Problem was patient opened his eyes and said, "I want to live!" My brother and his partner did get the man to the ER. Where he did survive and live for several years thereafter.

My mom had that DNR…her organs were failing at her old age. The hospital gave her some pain meds, went to sleep and after a few days, passed away. Miss and love you, Mama. I hope you and Dad found each other again up in heaven. I’ll see you two one day. 🥰🥰🥰

Anyone too young to understand: a DNR or Do Not Resuscitate is an order filled out by the patient that says not to try to revive them. Many people do it because they don’t want to live in a hospital for the rest of their lives or connected to a live support machine. In this case, if a DNR patient’s heart stops or they stop breathing you’re just supposed to let them pass away

When my brother was dying I had to be really clear about this. He’d been brought back several times and told us he didn’t want that. Every time they brought him back he was less present and less able. He’s at peace now.
