Although there are many studies showing the downsides to choosing DNR, it's important to remember the amount of unnecessary human suffering that is prevented by this status. The solution to the problems with the DNR status is NOT to get rid of it completely but to re-educate health care workers as to it's intended purpose. It should not be interpreted as "do not treat" and it deserves an in-depth conversation with each patient who chooses this status as to exactly what types of treatment they do and do not want.
