Transforming Conflict: From Fight-Flight-Freeze to Attend-Befriend with Tara Brach (Part 2)

In this insightful talk, Tara Brach delves into navigating conflict and trauma through the lens of mindfulness and compassion. When reactivity from past wounds triggers fight-flight-freeze responses, finding a safe, trusted space—whether with another person or a supportive group—becomes crucial. This talk explores how creating a larger field of belonging can foster the presence and empathy needed to transform conflict and reconnect authentically.

Key Topics:

▪️Reactivity and Trauma: Understanding the impact of past wounds on current conflicts.
▪️Attend-Befriend Approach: Shifting from survival instincts to mindful presence.
▪️Safe Spaces: The importance of a trusted person or community in healing and resolving conflicts.

With thanks and love,
Tara

As I sat in a meeting today, I was feeling the stress of social anxiety rising, my head and face becoming warm, the sweating was about to begin. When someone else was talking, I closed my eyes and came home to my body, my breath coming in, going out...I sort of 'felt around' inside, finding the fear. I put my hand on my heart and thought to myself, "I see you. I love you", and imagined a hug for the fear. My head and face cooled. The threat of sweat faded away. I was able to really listen to the others, and then contribute at the appropriate time.
Thank you Tara 💖🙏🏼💜🙏🏼

What is the difference between the young man who had been blinded regaining a healing sense of belonging by being able to tell his story, and being cut off seen as not being able to tell your story, and those ego stories that we are supposed to be letting go of? How can telling his story be healing on one hand but on the other hand perpetuate his suffering by reinforcing his ego story of being a victim? Not sure what I'm getting at and maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it just seems to me that telling stories about yourself kind of gets something of a bad rap in some of these talks, but so much of the insight comes via Tara telling people's stories. So, maybe self-stories aren't all bad?

Oh man I would love to be here but I can not sit in a wooden chair for longer than 20 mins before I’m in pain. I would have to bring my own chair. Or bed.
