I like to think Herb sent that balloon.

Penny’s mom was a good mom here. She saw her daughter in danger and got her out of the situation

My favorite part about this will always be the music. When I first heard it, I thought it sounded like it belonged in a horror movie. Then I realized…from Charlotte’s perspective, this is a horror movie. This is every parent’s worst nightmare come to life.
Imagine you have this old friend you haven’t seen in forever. You briefly reunite at a funeral, then go your separate ways again after inviting him to drop by if he’s ever in town. Imagine he shows up at your workplace out of the blue. You reconnect, introduce him to your family, let him hang out at your place for a couple months…things seem great. He’s practically part of the family now. You even trust him with your teenaged daughter and her friends when she needs someone to take her to a school dance.
Then it turns out he’s been pining for you for the past thirty years and expects you to ditch your husband and run away with him. And when you reject his advances and tell him it’s time for him to leave, he tries to have sex with your daughter. And to top it all off, one of the friends he was supposed to be watching wound up in the ER with alcohol poisoning.
Everything about this situation is terrifying. This was like a horror/thriller trying to disguise itself as a romcom.

Dude. Charlotte’s voice and tone in this scene had me sitting up straight. I think every kid knows that tone of voice and what it means. That’s a “don’t f with me you’re in deep shit” tone. Like I knew she wasn’t referring to Penny in that scene for long but it still had a reflex in me kick in. Whoever voiced her did a fantastic job.

This was the scene that solidified the show for me. Easily the worst and best moment of that season simultaneously. What a show...

It's interesting to note how the only reason Charlotte found out/intervened is the balloon - ironically, one Bojack himself made and released. A balloon changed the entire course of the show, almost like a butterfly effect. It's also horrifying to think what would've happened if not for that balloon.

I love the music in this scene, too. It just makes your stomach drop.

This scene hit me so hard. Considering my dad cheated on my mom with a 17-year old too. As you grow older you really just deep how messed up it really was...

I remember when I first watched this episode. My jaw dropped. This was the moment Bojack truly became irredeemable.

0:46 It‘s true that „f*ck“ isn‘t something so special. But hearing from someone, who is specially like nice and calm like Charlotte, the effect of this word is really strong than from a savage person.

I honestly wish people would stop trying to justify what Bojack did to Penny.
Penny is the only victim here. Not a 50-year-old man who tried to use her as a replacement for her mother.
She didn't provoke him into trying to have sex with her. He is a grown ass man who should know better than a high schooler.

I love Charlotte's expression when she hears Penny's voice in the boat. She knows what she's about to find, but she's still hoping against hope it isn't true.

Charlotte’s voice actress really made this scene. Her line delivery felt like a punch to the gut every time.

What sucks isn’t even the fact that Bojack’s 51 and he was about to do it with a 17 year old what sucks is the fact that he knew Charlotte since they were in school and he still decided it was a good idea to do it with CHARLOTTE’S DAUGHTER

I remember being so proud of Bojack for handling Penny's confessions so well then this scene came on and my heart absolutely sank

Age of consent is more complicated than just being “old enough”. It’s about understanding the importance, the consequences, the maturity both physically and emotionally from something like sex. Your leaving yourself vulnerable in an act that can have serious repercussions to your body and psyche. It’s not just penny be legally old enough, it’s about how she wasn’t emotionally mature enough to understand the magnitude of what she was getting into. Yes she should have accepted bojack’s first no but she was still a kid who didn’t think this was as serious as a deal as her mother likely told her which is why bojack’s decision was so wrong(him being in more control and holding more of an understanding of this than penny).

I like the writers' decision to only sparingly drop f-bombs in this show. It really makes them hit so much harder when they're actually said.

My stomach sank to the floor when Charlotte walked up to the ship and we heard that rattle the first time I watched this...

We see Penny look to Bojack for support after her mother walks in - only when he slumps down does she start crying and run off. Was she expecting him to back her up? Oh Penny you really don’t know Bojack.

I love this scene. It’s terrifying, but Charlotte’s response just feels so powerful and heroic. She meant every last word of it, and it feels like she was one of the few folks to not try to coddle Bojack in early seasons. She’s just an amazing mother

God, that "no" she lets out. Just pure fear and betrayal.
