Pilot Makes Emergency Landing on Busy Highway

Pilot Vincent Fraser made an emergency landing on a busy four-lane highway in North Carolina. It all started when Fraser was flying with his father-in-law over the Great Smoky Mountains when the single-engine plane suddenly failed. He was able to dodge power lines to make the emergency landing. Fraser was also able to land the aircraft without hitting a single-vehicle. Incredibly, he just got his pilot's license last October and has clocked under 100 hours in the air.

As a pilot myself we train for engine failures all the time. I was very impressed that he landed on a curved highways without much complications. He stuck to his training and remained calm under all the circumstances, well done!

Being an instrument rated pilot myself, I recognize how difficult it is to make a dead stick landing on a curved stretch of road AND avoid hitting any cars in the process. Obviously, you have no power so you only have one chance to get it right. You have to make very quick decisions regarding altitude, speed, and direction... translating them into actions you take with your Yoke and Rudder. He did a great job demonstrating that his training paid off.

It was a miracle, not only the plane and the people on board the plane survived the emergency landing, but not a single car was hit during the landing.

Imagine being a driver on the road and all of a sudden you see a plane coming down to share the highway with you. I would be thinking to myself, "Well that's something you don't see everyday..."
