This explains SO much about why I love the franchise ❤ thank goodness for the new art direction they went in. The horror of Pikmin being eaten and drown also are probably put in place by this artist. Perfection !

This makes SO much sense. So many aspects of Pikmin have always made me a little unnerved, even stuff like Shaggy Long Legs’ and the Burrowing Snagret messed with me as a kid (and still do now, mostly from the memories). I adore it.

They wouldn't look out of place in a "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" book. But yeah, good thing they went the directed they've gone; I think it ties in the "nature from a mass extinction event" and the, "tiny thing in a huge world" atmospheres pretty well without it going into the usual dark pallette.

Those early Super Mario-like sketches of the original pikmin designs may have inspired the Punies from Paper Mario Thousand Year Door.

something i noticed about these early designs that were in pikmin 1 but got dropped later on is that the pupils of pikmin were a lot smaller, with recent games giving them larger pupils in order to make them cuter

The music in Pikmin is reminiscent of the music in Fantastic Planet as well. I wonder if there's a connection there with the composer?
