UNI Track and Field Wins 12 Events at Jack Jennett

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa track and field team wrapped up the Mark Messersmith Invitational today with the Panthers shining on the track and on the field with multiple wins.

Jamie Lindstrom won the weight throw and shot put two days in a row, finishing with marks of 59-6.00 and a season-best 48-10.75 in the shot put. Along with Lindstrom’s win, Chloe Schmidt notched a third place finish in the weight throw, throwing for a huge personal-best of 57-11.75.

Issac Holtz shined in the men’s throws today, turning in personal-records in both the weight throw and shot put. Holtz won the weight throw with a mark of 59-5.00, also picking up a win in the shot put with a PR throw of 55-2.75.

Shawn Koch recorded a win in the men’s triple jump, going for a strong distance of 48-7.25. He also posted a top-three finish in the long jump, finishing second overall with a mark of 23-4.75.

Charles Fenner notched a big season-best mark in the men’s pole vault competition, walking away with a height of 15-7.00. Moving on in the vertical jumps, Kassidy Sharp placed second overall in the women’s high jump, grabbing a height of 5-6.00.

On the track, the Panthers had five student-athletes between the men’s and women’s teams qualify for the finals in the 60 meter hurdles, with Paige Knodle winning the women’s competition and Jon Rus placing third in the men’s. Knodle won with a time of 8.50 while Rus ran a time of 8.03 for his top-three finish.

Brandon Carnes came away victorious in the 60 meter and 200 meter dashes against, putting up times of 6.72 and 21.54. Corey Hertz also placed second in the men’s 200 meter race, gaining a new PR in the event with a time of 22.03.

Brett McCalla kept the momentum going into the 400 meters, running an indoor personal-best time of 49.02 for second place. Maddie Beeler also placed second in the women’s 400 meters, coming away with a time of 57.29.

Staying in the middle-distance events, Dylan Eigenberger scored a come-from-behind win in the men’s 800 meters, posting a career-best time of 1:53.39. On the women’s side, Brette Correy took her first crack at the 800 meters this season, winning the race with a time of 2:13.88.

Bailey Wetherell recorded a new personal-best in the men’s 3,000 meters, finishing with a time of 8:42.97. The Panthers finished with four top-10 finishers in the race, with Terry Nielsen (3rd), Zach Buchheit (5th) and Ben Fick (6th) all turning in strong performances.

The Panthers wrapped up the meet with the 4X400 meter relays, winning the men’s race and placing second in the women’s. The men’s team finished with a time of 3:17.34, putting them in the top-five in the valley. The women finished with a team time of 3:50.44 to round out a great outing for the Panthers.]

UNI will return to action on Feb. 5 when they take part in the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The meet is a two-day meet hosted by Notre Dame.
