The Marine Corps New Infantry Battalion Experiment

Marines and sailors with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment test the new infantry battalion organization construct during phase two of the Infantry Battalion Experiment at Marine Air-Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California, in August. Phase two of IBX demonstrated Marine leadership at the company level exercising more command and control of its Marines in a distributed environment, while employing new technologies to further enhance tactical employment of forces. Company level staff will now have more autonomy to conduct logistics, communications, intelligence and employ unmanned aerial systems. The IBX will conclude upon the completion of 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment's unit deployment program sometime in 2025.

Wow, at one time, Lt Col Gerald Noe used to be Lcpl Noe in my platoon back in Horno back in the day. I'm super stoked to see his brains pushing his ideas

Nice. I just hope they can still prevail if and when all that tech goes down.

Very cool concept. Give those company level units more assets to execute the mission indefinitely. Nice.

Whew they love the jargon don't they. They need a jarhead to English translator to accompany on documentaries like this. I remember it was like learning a second language. Semper Fi. Poor suckers at 29 Palms man I used to hate that place.

It's good to use new tech but they need to continue to train without it. We spent over 20 years fighting two wars with advanced technology and got is nowhere because we didn't have an objective and consider all possible strategies. I know that because I served in the Marines when 9/11 happened and deployed after.

I always felt like a small counter battery fire could be developed using a small radar systems and beaten zone fire from machine guns. The goal would be to defeat small mortar teams (<=81mm) that try to demoralize small formations. They fire, the radar senses the arc and provides the calculations to the machine gunner. Next thing you know the OPFOR mortar team receives a rain of 7.62mm bullets.

Such a weapon system would integrate well with this concept.

ULTIMATELY, ITS DO MORE WITH LESS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE MARINES AND THE REST OF THE ARMED FORCES WILL BE SPREAD THIN AS MULTIPLE FRONTS WILL BE FIGHTING SIMULTANEOUSLY.

As the USMC moves away from barreled artillery and tanks, it would seem that they would discuss what is going to fill in those roles. As an 0811, artillery has always been the greatest casualty producers on the battle field. This may have been replaced with unmanned FPVs but is still more than viable on the modern battlefield. Area denial, pinning an enemy in place, and destroying the enemy that is in close contact to the infantry. There is a current solution for strategic target destruction with HIMARS but not sure that will be an option for quick fire suppression for 03s that run into an entrenched enemy. Hopefully a mobile effective alternative is in the works but each attempt seems to fail miserably (large bore mortars with special prime movers that wasted a significant amount of money and was scrapped). Hopefully a viable fire support alternative is in the works. Things seem to be heating up.

Lots of reliance on technology. And who’s the unlucky one that gets to carry around the not-so tactical air compressor ?

We were experimenting with this in 2007, looks like its becoming more formal.

Improvise, adapt, overcome. It’s not a new idea, it’s an old adage.

The 3rd Army was great at flexible battle groups, (WW2) something the Brits never mastered due to their rigid Regiments.

Yea marines are tough…I guess. 25th Infantry in Hawaii though, those guys are elite I hear.

All of this high speed shit is great. BUT, there is an over dependence on it. What happens when these young Devil Dogs are faced with a situation where their high speed, low drag, High tech equipment fails? Not enough training on how to use plain old Iron Sights, the Mk I Eye Ball, Compass and Protractor, or how to use a non-computer based radio system. Can they set up a field expedient antenna for a radio? Do they know how to survive without all of the fancy survival gear? When it all falls into the crapper, that high tech gear is GOING to fail or be rendered inoperative, ineffective, or inaccurate and these young Marines are going to have to know how to fight EFFECTIVELY without it. We are MARINES, we can't just fold up shop and hunker down until we can get our gear working again like the Army. When you are out in front of everybody else in contact. or on some pissant little island in the Pacific that is not an option. There needs to be more training on the basics and more training on operations and operating WITHOUT all the high tech gear.
