So, you didn't tested the Nikon Z6/Z7 firmware, what a long explanation to just say you didn't test it...

I've updated the firmware on my Z5 and Z7 and I've noticed a huge improvement on how it succeeds to find the eye faster and stick to it. Although, being completely honest I was already more than satisfied with the eye- af before the update, since I already nailed the focus 99 / 100 times. We should all celebrate the progress that any brand makes, regardless on what you choose to shoot with since it stimulates others to keep up the race and it benefits more people to take even better photos no matter the brand. Which is awesome for our community :-)

Actually the AF of the Z6 with the 3.40 is pretty much improved

Huge update for the Z6.. The focus feels beter then my z6II even. I think Mr Fro is wrong. They took somthing from the upcoming z9 software tech and put it in the z6 :). Im sure they are working on a even beter update for the z6II and z7II. was really close call sell my Nikon gear and switch to Sony or Canon. This is good news for upcoming Nikons :).

I updated my Z6 BTW and the improvement in eye AF is and animal eye AF is like a totally new camera, great job to Nikon, I will wait longer and get the Z9 when they become available!! I guess at the end of next year with all the pre-orders

The fw update to the z6 is night and day. It's absolutely awesome. Works better than the a7iii for me.

Regardless of what people think of the original Eos R I still love mine, although I really wish they would do a firmware update, possibly Animal eye, even though it is not a wildlife camera, it would still be nice to have that option to use.

Jared, I have the z50 and the z5 and I update both, and I don't know if it will be something that I am doing differently now, I consider that if they managed to improve the autofocus of both cameras, I would like to know if someone else did these tests. or if I'm the only one who sees it ...

hmm! it seems Nikon programmers have found the correct algorithm for AF and eye detection.
Not sure Expeed 6 is so weak, maybe the software was.

Was definitely waiting on the R5/R6 vehicle af firmware update. Figured it would be much later on, though.

Context fro context. Nikon updating the first generation cameras to where they are - as I understand it from reviews - as good as the 6/7ii - tell me are canon and Sony still updating their first generation cameras?

They will obviously bring an update to the z6/7ii in due course (probably after the Z9 ships in December) with SOME of the improvements from Z9 based on the dual expeed processors being able to do more than the original single processor

You are completely right that a lot of Z9 tech won’t trickle down until the 6/7iii because the processor and sensor - so things like vehicle and 3d tracking almost certainly will not come in firmware

BUT - some of it will. Improvements will. The algorithm changes, the way it is used (modes etc) and some of the performance will be possible. Clearly it won’t be as fast or accurate but I think v2 will be better. Will it be as good as Sonys 3rd/4th gen offering or Canons 2nd/3rd generation - no but it will be closer clearly and at a significantly lower price point for the 2/3s of shooters who don’t need blazing fast tracking or AF!

And this it the thing you never mention to give Nikon any kind of mitigation. These are 1st generation cameras with 1st generation tech inside of them. Canon and Sony took multiple generations to get where they are (with 10-20x the financial power) whereas the z6/7iii will be their true second generation and what should be compared with the most a7iii/iv/r5/r6

I totally appreciate that you can only compare what is out there not hypothetical cameras. But you can say that it’s apples vs oranges, you can say that you expect a fairer comparison when the iii’s come out, you can say for a company that is 8-20x smaller than canon and Sony with lower budgets they are doing a good job, you can reiterate that 70-90% of the camera is as good if not better than the others. You can say a lot of what you say - which is true in so many respects - in a different way rather than come across as constantly bashing a brand

For those with the Z50 like me, has anyone been able to notice any improvement in the eye AF? The way it is worded, I'm sure that it means that the eye AF is only improved for when the flash is attached. My experience under the older firmware was that eye AF when using a flash was much worse than without a flash when live view was on (when using a flash it would brighten the preview image regardless of your other settings). Turning off live view would in all circumstances improve eye AF.
