Charushilla tells us why students need a career counselor today, How to find your dream college and What is the best time to get in touch with an education counsellor.
Charushilla is India's leading Career Counselor and College Planner. As an LSR alumni and a student of the Institute of Education, she's spent more than 17 years in the education sector. Her work with the youth - students in school, college and young professionals - has led her organisation, University Connection to being acknowledged as the Best Career Guidance company by the EdTech Awards 2020. Although she's based out of Delhi, her students are spread across the world. She's often shared with me how edu-preneurship is close to her heart and today we are going to talk about how education is evolving, and careers are evolving and what do you need to do if you want to ride this wave of change? Do you need a Career Counselor today now more than ever?
Why do I need a career counselor. I mean, it’s not like I need braces and cant do this on my own, so I need a dentist. So what are the big Need points for going to a career mentor today – I can go on, but let me share the top 3 –
One: Time Stamp issue. There is a timestamp on most careers that are top of mind for us. You are a Photographer and that is a known profession. But an Action /Sports Photographer or an Aerial Photographer or a Pet Photographer are some choices that might emerge after speaking to someone who read about careers.
Two: The Pace of Change. Things are changing at a phenomenal pace today. And I’m not just talking in terms of technology, look at the uncertainty that has just hit us – is it just a health issue, socio-economic issue or a psychological change. Talk to your counselor – she will be able to tell you why a more and more kids will now want to take up Pandemic studies or virology or emergency management
Three: Knowing of Knowledge – We have everything possible information available at the click of a button. So it’s not just about knowledge, but about what’s relevant in that knowledge. You cannot use cook pasta with jeera powder, I mean technically you can, but you know what I mean – just because it’s in the kitchen, you don’t put it in your dish. Similarly, a career counselor can help you make sense of what’s out there and put it in perspective.
How do you really help students find their dream college?
It all starts with a first basic counseling session, that may lead up to a deeper engagement model that I call the Road trip – a milestone like run up with multiple learning points, workshops, internships, profile enhancing activities, college research, scholarship research – all finally leading up to your dream college! Here, the most crucial aspect is figuring out the Filters of the family – their aspirations, budget expectations and overall readiness. You can’t let the student jump in without knowing how to swim! So a large part of what we do with students is helping them become great learners.
What is the best time for students to approach you?
The best time is grade 9 or 10. The optimum time is grade 11 – that is when you can not only work on / figure out the stregths of the student, yu can also help them deal with their areas of improvement, work on a profile, explore scholarship options. Do you know, in the last 3 years alone we have helped our students gather more than 45 million dollars in scholarships! And this is only possible when you start early. But I know, still the awareness is limited, so if you’re already in 12, don’t wait please come for a profile assessment.
