If more people raised chickens, less people would need antidepressants. TRUTH.

When Zoro went wild with the warning calls I died laughing!! 😂😂 I am just starting out with my new chicken flock and have been working so hard to get them set up for a happy, healthy life! Sprouts are wonderful in winter. Now it’s summer I carry a basket and when I weed or thin veg in the garden all that goes in the chick run, also plant something in the yard, toss the sod to the chickens they scratch it all to bits and love it.

I just rescued 2 battery hens 4 weeks ago, the transformation was incredible, within 48 hours we had the 2 hens coming to us to be held, that tells you that love conquers all species❤

Keeping chickens is illegal in my city, but I live dangerously. 😂

I live in an urban area that doesn't permit any livestock, and yes the local definition of livestock includes fowl. Fortunately my neighbors enjoy having their young children interact with my flock. (It brings back the mother's memories of her grandmothers' flock.) Indeed, many of my neighbors are fine with being bribed with eggs!

A story you'll appreciate. I was explaining to an intellectual high schooler all the conditions I'd have to comply with in order to follow my city's laws.
1. Have an acre or more of land. (I'm fortunate to have a 3/4 acre lot.)
2. All livestock enclosures must be X feet from any boundary of my property.
3. Pay a fee per animal.
This clever, intellectual high schooler summed it up succinctly, "So basically, you have to be wealthy to own chickens." So sad, but what was once a food resource for low income families is now a luxury. Many of us fly under the radar knowing if someone reports us we'd have to give up our flocks. An aquaintance's property adjoins a church's daycare/afterschool program's playground. One of the workers saw a snake in the playground, wrongly believes chickens attract snakes, reported it to her employer who took the family to court. The judge, whose wife has a flock said the law couldn't be clearer or more ridiculous, and so his hands were tied.

And yes my urban backyard has a snake I see almost daily. I've seen a baby possum (got into the run during the day!) likely attracted by our compost pile. And I feed wild birds black oiled sunflower seeds, which attracts rodents as well as wild birds. Our backyard had all this wildlife (snakes, possums, rats/mice, worms, ants, butterflies, raccoons, hummingbirds, wasps/bees, cockroaches, ferrel cats, hawks, bats, wild dogs, anoles) long before we had a flock of chickens. Humans don't "own" this world more than other animals do; they share this world with us. Indeed, it is we who must learn to share it with them.

I grew up in a small city and woke up to the crowing of the rooster in the flock of chickens up the street from us.

I love, love, love my lil chicks, chickens. Free eggs. They free range right now but gotta build a coop to keep the poop in a contained area. It will be 50% of my yard though.
Thank you for all your videos ❤❤❤🐓🐓🐓🐣

They dont currently allow chickens where I live but I still have them (4) I fortunately live on a dead end so no neighbors behind me or on one side and my neighbors dont mind them and the kids like to come over to see them. I absolutely adore my girls and they bring so much joy to my life. The eggs are just a bonus. I encourage anyone that is thinking about raising chickens to do it.

We don’t have much kitchen waste for our chickens so I sprout wheat berries and a greens mix.
The parsley lasted all winter in the greenhouse so they get parsley and field grass to peck through, too.
They love it to have roots/dirt.
There’s always jars on the counter and windowsill.
Have you ever thought about what it’s like when they eat the worms?
Crazy girl got a huge one the other day and after a few pecks, downed it whole!

Thank you for this video. I am a new Chicken mom (my girls are 6wo) and I am super worried that they are bored. I live in the suburbs and even though I have a big backyard, I also have all predators there, so they stay in the coop+medium run. Today I hang a little apple before I left for work but I am also looking for things to keep them happy and entertained. Thank you for your videos Madam President hehe!
