I learned that, sorta instinctively, while skiing under Thaynes Lift in the late '60's. It's really amazing how much more control I have when I feel perpendicular to the slope.

That is exactly what I explain to beginners. When walking everybody keeps its weight perpendicular to the ground, but if you’re going downhill or uphill you always lean forward or backward unintentionally. However, when skiing you have to maintain yourself perpendicular to the slope to keep the pressure on the skis.

I’ve noticed that the majority of novice & intermediate skiers will set off feet first rather than head first. In other words, they push off their poles, sliding thier feet forwards, which immediately puts them in the back seat rather than leading head first “nose over toes” and tipping their skis down the slope.

Simple fact, but helpful (I didn’t realized this for years)

Good video. You need your tips on the snow to carve those turns. Imagine a racecar on back wheels trying to turn on the front tires while doing a wheelie.

It's hard to not be scary to lean forward especially when snowboarding.

I disagree. As a ski instructor, you always remain in the centre.
