We Should At Least Try Something To Prevent These Shootings

Just giving my thoughts about gun control and mass shootings after the latest high school shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas. This is horrible and despite our huge idealogical divide on this issue, we need to figure out a way to at least do something, but hopefully multiple things.

It's sad when saying "We should do something to prevent school shootings" is considered political and divisive.

New follower here 🙋🏻‍♀️ Stumbled upon this one and even though it’s older, I feel like I have something to contribute.

I was a middle school math teacher for ten years (quit to be a stay at home mom). It might be helpful to explain what security looks like, at least at the schools in my district. Each school has all their doors locked from the outside. People can only get in through one set of doors. Both are good measures. Here’s where starts to fall apart. There’s a button that you have to push in order to be let in via the office staff. There’s a camera so they can see who is pushing the button. However, they unlock the door every time. How is the office going to know if someone is concealing weapons? They don’t have pictures of everyone who may enter the building with good intentions (parents, family members, delivery people, etc).

As teachers we felt like we were all sitting ducks. Anybody could be let in as long as they knew which door was the front door and push the button.

A friend of mine who also teaches middle school math, but in New York, has armed guards and metal detectors at their only entrance. It works. Here’s the three thing: it’s not just non-students that are a concern. It’s students too. I’ve personally taught some students who struggled with mental health issues or anger issues and I’ve legitimately worried about our safety.

Even though I support the second amendment, I don’t think giving teachers guns is the answer. Too easy for teachers to not take them seriously, be scared of them and get hurt or for students to somehow get ahold of them. I also don’t think taking every gun away is going to stop criminals or people who are mentally ill from finding one.

I think protection in the front of the school would go a long way to making everyone feel safer and make it harder for the mass shootings to happen. I’d also be open to talking about making it a more thorough process to get a gun but I think it would depend on each states laws, which I’m fairly certain are different but don’t quote me on that.

Anywho, Craig I love the channel(s)! I appreciate the out loud belly laughs I’ve had during some tough Mom days 😉

I was at work when I found out about the shooting. Another coworker mentioned super casually "there was another shooting" and there was a collective gasp/sigh about it, everyone said it was sad, and then went back to work. It really struck me and it makes me sad that we've all gotten so used to school shooting. We should NEVER "be used" to school shootings. I agree, we need to do something, but for that to happen we need to stop shouting blindly and have a discussion to meet somewhere in the middle, to try SOMETHING, instead of continually doing nothing. I don't know what my point is. I'm just sad.

Long time viewer here. Just wanted to drop a note to let you know how much I enjoy hearing you talk seriously about topics. This is a very tough subject, but I think it's great you addressed it and said what you feel about it. Love your comedy, but would definitely enjoy listening to you on a podcast sometime!

Living in the UK means I am so distant from this stuff but it still hurts my heart.

Thank you for putting all of your videos up; silly and serious alike!

Thank you for having the courage to speak your heart on this, Craig. I'm deeply grieved by the many shootings we've had this year alone, and agree that something needs to be done.

Thanks for talking about this, Craig. I was feeling very disappointed, partially in this happening again, and partially in myself for just feeling like "I guess this is just the normal order of things now." It's not normal, and you're right, we have to actually try things if we want this to not be our normal. I'm gonna go do some research and see what suggestions are happening locally.

Ugh!! It's so sad and hard and hurts my heart.

And Craig, thanks for making this. I think you handled the situation really well and I think you're right; "Nothing" is not the solution.
Problems like this not only scare me for my/or physical safety but just as much for... idk like, it also scares me that everyone is so angry and feels so badly that they need to be right.

These things already set everyone on edge and the discussions that follow just stir the pot (in *most* cases). We really need more discussion and conversation *rather* than argument if we want to provide as much help as we can.

Not to say that action isn't also necessary, but we can't have action fueled by anger and fear or else we'll create even more problems.

Your frustration resonates. I'm glad you made this. Doing nothing is not the answer. Our kids are too important.

Thank you for talking about this. I think we all have to be okay with talking about it, starting a discussion from the point of wanting to do something, before we'll ever be able to do something. So it's important that we all talk about it.

Condolences from Malaysia. Saw about Santa Fe on my twitter feed, couldn't really believe my eyes because the last US school shooting seemed so recent.

Whatever change that might happen won't be enough to stop another school shooting happening (it's kind of inevitable with so many guns in circulation and being easily accessible), but it might be enough to prevent another tragedy taking place, which I think would be worth it. I just wish there was a willingness for open constructive dialogue between people who want more guns and people who want to ban guns. Needs to be mutual respect and understanding if anything is to happen though, and sadly, it's just going to be a ridiculing contest from both sides I fear.

Just finished my contract as a primary school teacher, so this news does really get me down.

Bring back the funny next week Mr Wheezy! We need it now more than ever!

You're absolutely right. When this news came out my first thought was: man, I hope the parkland kids jump on this and progress it to a point where we can get some sort of reform. But that is relying solely on other people. And while I agree with them and believe that their efforts align with my own idealogies I cannot only lean on others to forward my ideas. One must take responsibility for their own agendas. Whether that be pro gun or gun ban. We should not wait for strangers to do what we wait for and rather do so ourselves.

Thanks for doing this Craig! It is so sad that this keeps happening. It’s hard to fathom why children and adults think the thing to do when life gets tough is to destroy everything around them. I wish we could all be peaceable and live together. We could advance so much further if humans were like that. Again thank you Craig!

Thank you for posting this video, Craig. I almost didn't click because I wasn't sure I could take any more information about the shooting in, but I'm glad I watched. (And it reminded me that refusing to take new information in is in effect doing nothing, so thank you for that, too.)

Thanks Wheezy for putting it out there. Your restrained response is what most of us feel. We all hurt and don't want to get everyone upset at the same time. Huh, what is to be done?
