Design Patterns in Biblical Narrative

Design patterns are one of the key ways the biblical authors have unified the storyline of the Bible. Individual stories across the Old and New Testaments have been coordinated through repeated words and parallel themes. These patterns highlight core themes of the biblical story and show how it all leads to Jesus.

As a theatre major in college, I often found myself saying things like, "It's as if there is someone up there righting my story..." or some variation of it. At the time, I was a staunch atheist who wanted nothing to do with God and looked down upon christians as people who were stupid for believing in this magical God instead of all-encompassing science.

It was having my eyes open to the way things seemed to fit together, patterns, "coincidences" that drew me back to the belief in a creator. I then went through a series of circumstances that had to have been divinely orchestrated, the timing of everything just did not make sense. It was here that the Lord used his incredible power of weaving His Story that I was able to come to know Him and it was through reading His divinely inspired Word that I learned about my Savior, Jesus Christ.

"All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right." (2 Timothy 3:16).

As the scripture states it is the Lord who inspired all Scripture and that truth needs to be remembered as we remember the Biblical writers and explore the patterns.

The water and the Life-giving Spirit is another theme that is on page 1 of the Bible (as Dr. Mackie says!) in Creation and shows up again at Jesus’ baptism where the Life-giving Spirit is again “hovering over the waters” this time as a dove over the river! This is so amazing ! I've only just found out about you guys yesterday and couldn't stop watching your videos. I am so thankful for the hard work, study, thought and love that you all put into this. I've been taught to study God's word in depth since I was in elementary School and had trouble staying focused, but you're works of art are so easy to follow and its there for one main purpose.
