Setting in Biblical Narrative

Every story has to take place somewhere, and very often locations have a special meaning or significance evoked by events that already took place there. In this video, we explore how biblical authors use settings in the narrative to meet the reader's expectations or mess with them. Paying attention to locations and time in biblical stories unlocks deeper layers of meaning.

Many people commenting keep making statements like: “You should not be emphasizing the authors, but The Author, ” “You are wrong for crediting humans with creativity in their writing, ” etc.

Here are a few facts:
• The Tanakh (Old Testament) and the B'rit Chadasha (New Testament) were not golden tablets that fell from heaven. This isn't Mormonism. Every reputable biblical scholar recognizes this fact. It is a literary work, written over a span of time, and in different places, to different audiences, and was accumulated together into this masterpiece.

• The Bible (Old + New) is a literary compilation that has been composed and interwoven for 1500 years using people's own languages, dialects, first person expressions, personal feelings, etc. Unless the Ruach ha-Kodesh (Holy Spirit) just took people and made them into human typewriters (which would violate their free will), we are left with the millennia-old debate of the process of inspiration, canonization, etc.

• The Bible is clearly 100% from the Ruach and 100% from human creativity and genius. The Bible places such a strong emphasis on humans and their creative abilities. This does not deny the theopneustos ("theos" =God; "pneuma" = breathed; translated "inspired of God" in KJV) nature of the Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Denying the human side of the Bible project speaks volumes of how you view humans as God's image-bearers.

• The Bible Project, clearly, does not view the Bible as just a bunch of old sages who got inspired like Shakespeare and wrote a literary work. The Ruach is the one who has overseen and structured this project and its development (referring to the actual compiling nature of the Scriptures).

• Unless you have studied Textual Criticism or have done some really in-depth work (beyond just preaching at a church), you should sit down and spend a month in reading up on textual criticism and sit with it before you bash 20+ people who have studied this for weeks and condensed their thoughts to a 5-minute video. Not being disrespectful, but unless you've really sat down and studied this, you should be slower to criticize and quicker to dig deeper.

Thank you for the context. Thank you for all the context, actually.

Your inspired work has moved so many obstacles - that I was blind to - off of my path to Christ. I see I’m not the only one.

I thank everyone at the Bible Project. I pray the Lord blesses you and your excellent work.

Hey Bible Project, so far in 2018 I have been taking my youth group through a study of the major characters of the Bible. This week we are talking about Abram and Sarai going to Egypt. As I was doing my study for this week's lesson I got a notification for this video. It fits so perfectly along with what we are talking about that it kinda freaked me out. God's timing is so great. I cannot tell you how invaluable your videos are to my church and for the Kingdom. Keep up the great work.

The color transitions in this video were a visual delight! It kept me guessing how the scene would "bleed" out to the next one. And ofc it goes without saying the information packed within it was also illuminating. (Never made that "to the east" association before!)
