Capcom has released 'next-gen' upgrade patches for Resident Evil 2/3 Remake and indeed Resident Evil 7. Three modes are added - performance, 120Hz and ray tracing - with all three current-gen consoles getting every upgrade. So how does each mode perform on each piece of hardware? Oliver Mackenzie has the details.

Regardless, good on Capcom for even bothering. And it's always nice to see a solid in-house engine continuing.

Actually the biggest upgrade are the loading times, also counts for cutscene skipping and costume changes on the fly. They should just add the option to lower the Resolution to 1440p in RT and HF mode if someone pleases.

Impressive what they did with Serie S. Ray tracing, 120fps and 60fps all with a 1440p resolution must not have been easy. In 2 years of console Capcom was probably the first one who achieved this.

I just finished RE2 remake with RT, on Series X. It was fantastic! I didn’t notice any frame rate issues. Really showed it as I’d forgotten most of the story.

These seem like “future proof” modes. When these games runs back compat on future hardware, we will be very happy that these modes with higher fps targets exist

RT mode should run at 1800p. The difference in res is barely noticable, but it will probably ensure a locked 60 fps.

To all game developers: Please give us another option for playing games at 1080p 60fps with RT. A lot of people use 1080p tv's/monitors.

A 500 $ gaming machine to deliver 4k60 (in this game at 100 fps) and still be able to run games for a decade. Yes! Thanks!🤘🏻

Games like this make me happy I bought a LG C1 OLED. Playing the high framerate with VRR has been amazing.

Just played through RE2 with Ray Tracing on Series X and it was a great experience. An already beautiful game even better. Not a locked 60 but more than playable.

These consoles REALLY are impressive for their price point given the performance they put out. Especially the Series S. That little thing is a beast.

I will say, comparing the console version with my PC that was about double the price. These next gen consoles are actually a really big bang for the buck. Despite some criticisms. Paying 400-500 for a machine that can do all this is really good. I'll even give props to the series S. Sure it's not the best quality but for 299.99 it does alot of the price

RE2 in specific benefits a lot from 120 FPS mode since the knife damages are per frame. The console speedruns times are going to improve.

Only played RE2 with ray tracing. Game already looked great but the RT definitely made it much prettier in some areas. The main spots where I had FPS drop off are big areas like the police station lobby and the lab/plant area.

No reflections in mirrors but in RE2 you can see raytraced reflections in computer monitor screens. One example is near the end of the game in Umbrella's lab, inside of the room where you take Sherry to lie down. Check it out.

I was hoping you would show the differences in the laboratory level of RE2, that showed really weird reflections or textures or whatever it was on PS4 Pro. Really wondered how it looks like now.

I never play at 120fps any game that is not competitive but i LOVE the fact that they let us choose

Very generous of Capcom, I must say. Appreciated! Gave them all a spin after the update (on PS5) and they’re a fantastic experience with RT and VRR. RE3 comes out on top for me for visual splendour and performance. Still unconvinced by RT reflections. They’re nice but don’t add much to the experience that high quality SSR doesn’t already do.

Series X ray tracing with VRR is a pretty stable experience. I still however don’t feel like RT is ever worth the performance hit. I will always advocate for locked framerates, even if that means a locked 30. Fluctuating framerates kill any experience for me.

Marvel’s Spiderman is the best example of running RT with locked 60fps. I wish all the titles in future have this option. Otherwise sacrificing fps for RT just not worth it.
