I love how the sound of a Black hole is absolutely terrifying yet the sound of two of them colliding is just like a "Bloop" 🤣

I used to hear sounds like this in sci-fi movies from the 50s/60s, chalking it up to cheesy sound effects as to what filmmakers believed space and other worlds sounded like. Come to find out many years later, these sounds are quite eerily similar to those in the movies, and are in fact real. INTRUIGING

I wonder if 1950s Hollywood knew how accurate their "science fiction" sound effects were.

That ad was timed perfectly. "Like something we aren't supposed to hear. Have a listen", and I put the phone to my ear, and an ad fired off

The sound of two of the most powerful and mysterious objects in the universe colliding: "bloop"

The most terrifying sound would be on a Friday and a supervisor is looking for people for Saturday work.

Black Holes sound exactly as I expected. Eerie and haunting, like a giant mawl swallowing up reality.

Very cool.

That Black Hole sound is one of the most terrifying things I've ever heard. Amazing that (unlike, say, the 'pop' of the colliding Black Holes) the sound is fitting for the closest thing we've found to hell, where existence itself is torn apart. Chilling.

7:04 I like how there's all these precise graphs next to a silly drawing of the sun with a face

It's amazing how many of these sounds seem to reflect the early electronic music from "Forbidden Planet!"

I'm sorry, man, but that's a mistake. First, I wanna say I'm a fan of Astrum. Thank you so much for the great work, it's really incredible!
I'm a professor in the field of sound. Sonification means that someone chose how numbers are translated into sound properties (frequency, amplitude etc) so as to have an aural "reading" (rather listening) of the data. So, it's not the sound of the celestial body, it's the translation of data into sound. On the other hand, one may choose how to translate according to a specific purpose or team of researchers or different perspectives on the same data, and so on. That means you can't compare between two analysis in a direct way.
Sonifications can yield really great aesthetic results, that's for sure! And they do that while informing a trained and attentive ear of something about the data that the eyes wouldn't be able to catch on a chart, for example. That's the genius of this research technique. It acknowledges that we can learn a lot through simply listening better. I think that's part of their charm, but it also leads to the confusion between what is in the phenomena and what is our reading of them. These sounds are not in the phenomena, they are created by us.

You call the black hole bone chilling, I call it “sleep sounds” and save it to the playlist I start when I can’t sleep. That was remarkably calming

When I was a kid, I had a telephone suction cup microphone that you would push onto the telephone receiver if you wanted to record a phone call. It was just a coil. It had no moving parts. I remember I would hold the thing near electronic devices, such as my big sister's Casio calculator and monitor the sound on the tape recorder. The sounds were really interesting and were very much affected by what you were having the calculator do. That was back in the late 70s and early 80s.

Saturn plasma waves sounds like a 1950s sci fi movie! And the two black holes combining "blooped!" 🤣🤣🤣

Got an ad playing dubstep in the middle of the Saturn sounds, I was like “Okay ring planet breaking it down?”

With all the bad news and worries these days—the wars, inflation, climate change, and extremist movements—watching a video about something interesting and mesmerizing, something that piques my curiosity, is so wholesome. It is something worthwhile that I want to spend my time on. Thank you for making these videos.

So I can make the same sound with my mouth that colliding black holes can? Nice.
