The Lightning

A pilot’s experience of flying the English Electric Lightning Fighter, a supersonic fighter developed in the 1950’s that saw service throughout the 1960’s until the late 1980’s. It was a high performance Jet Fighter the performance of which is difficult to match even today.

A terrific upload -thank you. I started my first career, in the met office at RAF Middleton St George, back in the early 60s-after Hunters and Javelins came 226 OCU with Lightnings-happy memories.

Lucky man indeed although a reward for hard work and dedication so kudos to him ! The E.E.Lightning is my favourite jet ever to see R.A.F. service. I was lucky enough to experience them at airshows in my childhood and they were a truly unforgetable experience.

1967 at Coltishall, at that time I was a Radar Engineer at RAF Bawdsey so I probably saw him, as a dot on a radar screen.. Too often a small fire resulted in a return to base care of Martin Baker.
