Sam Witwer Talks Dave Filoni + Inconsistencies In Canon

In this short Sam Witwer talks about bringing Starkiller to life and finding a place for The Force Unleashed within Star Wars Canon according to George lucas, explaining that the different projects within Star Wars are allowed to have some inconsistency because they are told in different contexts - the clone wars can have some inconsistencies with the movies and the games can have inconsistencies with everything else.

What do you think of this take according to both George Lucas and Dave Filoni?

I love that sam gets to just geek out like this about star wars still

Synopsis of Star Wars (courtesy of Wikipedia):

The Star Wars franchise depicts the adventures of characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" across multiple fictional eras, in which humans and many species of aliens (often humanoid) co-exist with droids, which may be programmed for personal assistance or battle. Space travel between planets is common due to lightspeed hyperspace technology. The planets range from wealthy, planet-wide cities to deserts scarcely populated by primitive tribes. Virtually any Earth biome, along with many fictional ones, has its counterpart as a Star Wars planet which, in most cases, teem with sentient and non-sentient alien life. The franchise also makes use of other astronomical objects such as asteroid fields and nebulae. Spacecraft range from small starfighters to large capital ships, such as the Star Destroyers, as well as space stations such as the moon-sized Death Stars. Telecommunication includes two-way audio and audiovisual screens, holographic projections, and hyperspace transmission.

The universe of Star Wars is generally similar to the real universe but its laws of physics are less strict allowing for more imaginative stories. One result of that is a mystical power known as the Force which is described in the original film as "an energy field created by all living things ... [that] binds the galaxy together". The field is depicted as a kind of pantheistic god. Through training and meditation, those whom "the Force is strong with" exhibit various superpowers (such as telekinesis, precognition, telepathy, and manipulation of physical energy). It is believed nothing is impossible for the Force. The mentioned powers are wielded by two major knightly orders at conflict with each other: the Jedi, peacekeepers of the Galactic Republic who act on the light side of the Force through non-attachment and arbitration, and the Sith, who use the dark side by manipulating fear and aggression. While Jedi Knights can be numerous, the Dark Lords of the Sith (or 'Darths') are intended to be limited to two: a master and their apprentice.

The franchise is set against a backdrop of galactic conflict involving republics and empires, such as the evil Galactic Empire. The Jedi and Sith prefer the use of a weapon called the lightsaber, a blade of plasma that can cut through virtually any surface and deflect energy bolts. The rest of the population, as well as renegades and soldiers, use plasma-powered blaster firearms. In the outer reaches of the galaxy, crime syndicates such as the Hutt cartel are dominant. Bounty hunters are often employed by both gangsters and governments, while illicit activities include smuggling and slavery.

The combination of science fiction and fantasy elements makes Star Wars a very universal franchise, capable of telling stories of various genres.

It makes some sense but there’s a fine balance between being consistent and not. Like Sabine in ashoka is pretty much a completely different character you need to make them evolve not just change at the snap of a finger

This is one of the few things i disagree with Witwer on

inconsistency was used pretty wonderfully for legends content because there were so many different authors and stories being told about so many different eras, but inconsistency between one persons work is just lazy and is being used as an excuse from filoni. anything filoni makes in his world should be consistent with his previous work, but it can differ from what was established by someone else.

Hence why from a certain point of view

I sort of get it..but also I sort of don’t. I would have thought consistency is key?

Consistency is important, that's why fans were confused by some of the choices in the Prequels when it first came out.

i agree with different perspectives being interesting, there's a lot of value in telling a story from different people's perspectives rather than telling it objectively, but unless you're using the perspective of an idiot there's no reason why simple facts like a lightsaber colour should change. a different perspective on the same story is stuff like how you interpret characters or how you feel about events

The whole series starts with, "long ago, in a galaxy far, far away." That very opening line sets the narrative tone and tells you these are STORIES being passed down.

I don’t remember where I read it or if its true but there was a post that said something along the line of “the clone wars animated show is actually a fictional holonet program that was broadcast as war propaganda and though what we watch isn’t EXACTLY what happened it is a dramatized retelling of real events”

Disagree. They should absolutely strive for consistency. At least within each genre. Animation can be exaggerated but needs to be consistent in itself. Their rules and limitations should be consisten. The lore should not contradict itself. It should feel like another place that exists. Its hard to be invested when there are no expectations

The only way I could see this work is if there were different storytellers. Kind of like how there are multiple Gospels. I believe the original ending of Star Wars was Artoo and Threepio passing along the tales. If there is some in universe explanation for stories not being 100% consistent, it would make more sense. It's kind of like how comic books can get away with trying new ideas without crippling their world building by just making them multiple universes that still share a connection.

I can see where they’re coming from but I worry that Star Wars stories will become more inconsistent overtime and will rely on the term ‘campfire’ as safety blanket excuse.

No it’s good if the stories are consistent

Mmmmh

Yes and no

Its ok when details varies, cause yes you can interpret the stories BEING told by someone else, instead of YOU (the audience) to LIFE it through the characters eyes and actions.

BUT there are still things that are unmutable.

No matter who tells a story, Gravity still work as gravity does, the Laws of the world still applies.

If the Force does one thing in a story and does something else in another, evne tho they are supposed to be the same, then that means there is a Discrepency and something is not right.

Bullshit. I love Witwer to death and applaud his knowledge, but Filoni's take on it is just lazy.

Thank God someone sees realism. Maybe now the Starwars fans will calm the f down and stop trying to cancel their own fandom

If only that got told to us on a large scale

I strongly agree with this take. As long as the general lines of the story are consistent (and the films are considered accurate), its more interesting and honestly more realistic for there to be some inconsistencies.

Its a big galaxy out there. Unfathomably huge. People on ONE planet have different memories of particular events. People on a thousand planets definitely would.

As long as it's done the right way, take notes Kathleen 😂

INCORRECT. Filoni is making excuses for breaking continuity
