Both in the media & in the public, game designers & developers are often used interchangeably. However, if you dream about one day turning your passion for playing games into a hobby or career of creating them, it’s vital to know if a future as a video game designer or video game developer is the best fit for you.

This is mainly due to the fact that within the game industry, the jobs & responsibilities of a game designer & a game developer are completely different & are two distinct career paths.

Game design is closer to marketing and branding. Game development is closer to production and operations. Game design is multi-disciplinary. Game development is highly-specialized.

To say designers conceptualize the idea is a bit misleading. The first thing to tell you in class for game design is that you are not the idea guy. Unless you are indi dev, 99% of the time your working on someone elses idea. Typically story, theme, and worlds are all determined by the creative director or the writers. Designers typically handle scale, prototyles for the ideas given to them, and game mechaincs. There main job is to help guide the player through the playspace and make the experience FUN.

The title makes a big difference into your career.
I thought they both went hand in hand thinking dev would lead to design. That was not the case. Ideally you would do both but many places developer means to just develop the content. Not design it.
