Why Bernadette Was The Worst In The Big Bang Theory

A huge part of the massive appeal of "The Big Bang Theory" was just how plain likable so many of the characters were. Sure, they were quirky and sometimes had off-putting traits, but for the most part, it was hard to resist just how fun it was to spend half an hour with this group of nerds.

The series began with a core group of characters: Sheldon, Howard, Raj, Leonard and Penny. But more characters joined the group as the show went on, including Howard's eventual wife, Bernadette Rostenkowski. While Bernadette was a great friend, scientist, spouse and mother, she had one trait that wasn't so positive. Here's why Bernadette was the worst in "The Big Bang Theory."

I liked her character in the beginning but then they just made her 50% screaming and the other 50% just flat out rude.

I hated the way she always acted like Howard didn't make his own money at work. I looked it up, he would be making between 60 to north of 100, 000 a year. Especially after his trip to space. Yet at every turn he needed to get "permission " to spend a dollar?

What struck me was the garage sale episode where she completely disregarded Howard's feelings to sell his TARDIS. You don't disrespect your spouse that badly if you're at all a decent person.

i was baffled by how mean she should get, it was as if they didnt really know what to do with her

Honestly when yo back up and look at the show without nostalgia goggles, it made fun of nerds. They may know nerd culture, but they also made nerds the butt of so many jokes

I hated it when she blatantly told Penny she was wrong for not wanting to be a mom. When she herself didn’t want to be mom either and only had her children by accident 🤦🏽‍♀️

She made her husband get rid of his TARDIS, she’s the worst because of that alone. lol

Bringing in Bernadette & Amy, then changing TBBT from a great sitcom about single people to a mediocre one about couples & families was a big mistake.

What about how Bernadette is at work and everyone is afraid of her

The “bUt HoWaRd” comments are hilarious. He was awful at the start of the series but he grew as a person and became a pretty decent guy after he married and had kids.

And this is about Bernadette dingdongs. She became an awful person, wife, and “friend” as the series went on. Just because she was short she acted like she could be a bitch because “I have a sweet voice” (I can say lol no at that since Melissa’s voice isn’t like that really).

Being a writer, I enjoy long series to see character development and between her and Penny I don’t know which was worse.

Like SO many secondary female characters on tv series, she started off being likeable. And turned into a witch. Another great example of this (trope?) is in Frasier and Daphne who went from being strong willed but bumbling, to a hateful harridan. For no good reason. It’s a strange thing, maybe all those male scriptwriters thing that for a woman to be ‘Strong’ that means they have to be assholes.

Bernadette was pretty sweet in the early seasons. Imo the shift began when she came to live with Howard and his mom. Her character became more short-tempered, bossy and condescending afterward.

She's not merely 'a bit unlikeable at times', she's very unlikeable.

She was hard to like in the final few series - controlling, rude and pushy

then again, Sheldon could be insufferable at times

Overall, I would say Leonard, Raj and Amy (with the exception of the Fun with Flags episode where she was rude to Will Wheaton) were the most likeable characters. All three have flaws but are very patient, loyal and good at heart

Howard improves over the show - sleazy at first but dropping that early on

I felt sorry for Stuart especially being constantly left out - but then he got a bit petty later on

I just finished watching the episode where Howard says he’s going to go to space and it frustrating the she guilts him into thinking he’s in the wrong for not telling her and then she just has the final say on how he’s life and care works out there are lot of double standards that the girls do to the guys where if it were switched people would question it like penny gets drunk and just to demand sex or freelode of them if any of the guys did that they would be questioned

To all the people who wrote comments here like "But Sheldon was much worse!", or "But with Sheldon it's ok or what?!"
Have you even seen the show?! Because you definitely didn't understand the character of Sheldon.

Sheldon has of course "misbehaved" very often.
But he is not aware of it. He doesn't do it purposefully and he usually doesn't understand it.
He obviously has Asperger's or autism.

Bernadette, on the other hand, is well aware of what she does and how she hurts other people. ("I earn more salary than you" is a very good example)

The most ironic part was when she says to penny that Abu (Raj's last arrange date from his dad ) is so much successful into her field and best she does is Raj ?.. WTF she marrried a 100 lbs creep and not Ryan Gosling.

Hang on, BBT didn't make nerds cool at all. At best it made you understand them, at worst it made you pity them.
It constantly reiterated all the shitty prejudices about nerds and nerd culture from like the 70s on. They're all socially awkward, dysfunctional weirdos with sometimes literally fantastical spleens who need the "normal" girl next door to navigate the world.
And then the girl next door is the clichée of the dumb blonde, the very smart girl is the awkward, unattractive wallflower, and the smart girl who wants a career sometimes suddenly bosses people around. But she's small and has a high pitched voice, haha.
Man, this series was alright at first but just pissed me off the longer it lasted and this shit became painfully obvious.

Bernadette changed and not for the better, she became a horrible bully

She was mean and controlling. What I didn't like, is the way she ran the show by refusing to let Penny get a Cinderella makeover.
