American Airlines flight 1572 was a regularly scheduled flight from Chicago O'hare to Bradley Intl Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut. During it's decent in poor weather, the aircraft struck a mountain, lost its engines, glided for a bit, hit a tree and then the ILS equipment before coming to a stopon the runway.

I was actually on that flight. This video brings back lot of memories.
I can tell you one thing for sure. We hit more than one tree. I hiked up that ridge a few weeks later after my knee healed up. That aircraft took out quite a bit of treetops coming over that ridge.
50 feet lower, and thisvwould be a totally different story. One I would not be able to talk about now.

Description doesn't begin to do it justice, especially the damage it did when it came down short of the runway. Like, short. Took out not just one tree, but MANY.. plowed right through the barbed wire perimeter fence, ILS equipment etc. The entire area was scorched as if a large fire took place, and it was a long time before the vegetation grew back to cover it. Those people were very lucky. My understanding is that after being re-built, it never quite flew right again. In fact, AA pilots had a name for her: The Hartford hedge trimmer...

Lets not just gloss over that flaps trick. That little bit of lift created by retracting and then setting the flaps to 40 got em to the runway and saved everyone on board.
