I share Rubin's perspective. For example, I don't look down on my 20-year-old self for not "doing better." I didn't have the knowledge that I have now. If anything, I feel empathy, because I know it's hard to be in a situation that you don't fully understand. Humans need room to fail. It may not be ideal, but it's part of the growing experience.

I like the advice Josh Homme gave during one of his interviews: "When you expect anything from music - you expect too much. So you play it for yourself, you play to enjoy it. And you make the most of it for you"

-Don't listen to anyone
-Do/Make what you love

Damn, the synergy between these two at the end of this clip was impressive!
"Its hard to look back at a diary entry and think, 'I did it wrong.'"
Our actions in life are like diary entries... That's a great way to look at life.

Best advice for young people "DONT LISTEN TO YOUR DUMB FRIENDS"

Rick Rubin always looks like a mad scientist that came out of the room after his invention explodes

I’ve been around some very successful people in my life, and one common thread is that they didn’t half-ass through whatever thing they were successful at. Success almost always requires maximum effort at some point. That sounds daunting, HOWEVER….if you enjoy what you’re doing then giving maximum effort is not an obstacle. The challenge for young people is figuring out “your thing.” I didn’t find it until I was 21 and in my third year of college. But once I did find it my life changed dramatically for the better.

Man. This guy really understands art. This is my exact out look on making music.

sometimes it's difficult to not have the audience reaction in mind when making art. but when you can achieve that, combined with acceptance of death, you are truly free to create amazing things in this world

Everything Rubin said is on point, the one thing missing is process. Art is factory work, it's repetition with a passionate reason, it's process. You make it till you fake it, you fake it till you make it and every point between. You fight to be there. To be Present and accounted for.

He's right...everything we do is like a moment in time, and I totally understand what he's saying. I look back at my previous works and the Lex voice says "i wish i had..." and then the Rick side replies "but you did the best you could with what you had..."

steps for success. 1. grow your hair out. where it isn't messy, make sure it's standing straight up. confirm this in the mirror before your interview. 2. if you're the interviewer, take a pair of dull scissors and cut your bangs. mess up what remains. look bewildered.

This is what makes artists so awesome! Rick Rubin explaining that all you can do is all you can do but that is enough. And if you’re bored of something then it’s done. Accept everything and stop second-guessing yourself. Bonus Always make the art for yourself

I love love love this: I’ve done everything I can to make it the best it can be in that moment, I can’t do more than that, there’s nothing to be critical of. And if I’m not interested in it anymore, it’s done. I’m gonna put this in my diary right now. ☺️

Respect this video very much needed this, doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Make your own art for yourself the audience. I aspire to be part of the music movement, I feel a lot closer than I was before so I’m not rushing nor am I worried that it won’t happen.

Thank you for this advice, there is so much advice out there making young people feel inadequate. I started making my own videos because I love doing it! Even though no one watches my videos I'll keep doing it for myself :)
