I think I understand the confusion between these two at the 2:00 mark about when it’s done: if you are not doing what Rick says at the beginning and making it for you, and if you don’t trust your own opinions, you can never say it’s as good as it can be. If you have self criticism, and especially if you are judging it based on what you think other people will like, you can never feel like it’s done.

Basically he's saying be authentic. Make the art you want to make, and the authenticity will be obvious. People hate phonies and pretentious.

However, a lot depends on taste. Many people have bad taste and don't understand what makes a piece of art quality. And in many ways, even if you do have good taste, it takes years of practice for a vision to be realized. But if you try and make something you don't really like just to please others you will never get there.

But also, there is a whole industry full of talented people who make clichéd, derivative, formulaic art, which is technically excellent and executed, and popular. But it still lacks artistic merit and is garbage compared to classical standards of art. Standards which stood the test of time, because beauty is not subjective, there is a formula for beauty just as there are laws of nature.
