First team roping I ever worked, I came down with heat exhaustion. I hadn't worked that hard since my military days. Cowboys got off their horses and helped me recover. They took me to the office with A/C, their wives and them started handing me Gatorades, ice water, and one cowboy handed me a liter of pickle juice on ice. Hungout with two cowboys in office, glanced over at one of them, and he asked, "How you feelin', there, cowboy?"

I'll never forget that.

Most of them were raised in it, had horses given to them as a kid, etc. It's a way of life a lot of us wish we had

Don’t call him a cowboy till you’ve seen him ride.

I worked on a working ranch, on horseback taking care of the animals, fixing fences etc. for 5 years. that was the best time I’ve ever had in my life!!

Best thing that ever happened to me was visiting my grandpa in Montana. 2006, I was 16, grandpa’s neighbor was a professional saddle bronc rider. I spent 4 summers up there just hanging out with that guy, riding a few of his broncs, getting hurt over and over. It gave me a real sense of respect for just how tough those guys are. Now I turn it on the tv and my wife knows… a whole case of banquet is about to be drank and our son and I are not to be messed with until the tv goes off. My favorite aspect of American culture, much love and much respect to both the working and riding cowboys out there.

Old saddle bronc rider here. You are spot on.

I was also raised on a ranch and cowboyed for 40-plus years.

I finally got busted up too bad and had to hang it up. I've had 21 orthopedic surgeries from rodeoing and cowboying. I've had my right knee replaced 4 times and 9 total surgeries on the leg from a horse I was starting when I was 17.

When I get up in the morning, everything hurts, but every ache and pain has a story behind it, and I can't help but smile at the memories.

My dad had more broken bones than any man I met and it’s all from bull riding. He rode in the 60s, 70 & early 80s, so he’s seen a lot of the big names. Before he passed his favorite bull rider of all time was JB. I think it was because JB acted like a 1940s cowboy but will say it’s because of the riding.

My great grandfather went into the Army at the outbreak of WWI. He went to the local Army base and saw a vet and others struggling to handle a horse and jumped out there and brought it to heel (i dont know proper term) The vet requested that my great grandfather be given orders to stay here so he spent the war breaking horses and training them fairly close to home. Probably saved his life in the long run. I say all that to say I've always thought of him as the real deal too.

"There's a hundred years of history, and a hundred before that, all gathered in the thinking going on beneath his hat. The cold flames burn within him until his skin's as cold as ice, and the dues he paid to get here are worth every sacrifice. All the miles spent sleepy driving, all the money down the drain, all the "if I's" and the "nearly's", and the passion and the pain. All the female tears run dry, and the fever and the fight, are just a small down payment on the ride he makes tonight. It's GUTS, and LOVE, and GLORY. It's one mortal's chance at fame. His legacy is "Rodeo", , and "COWBOY" is his name!"
