Mazda has been pushing into luxury territory lately, and the all-new CX-70 is no exception. But can Mazda really compete with brands like Lexus, Audi, Infiniti, and Acura? To find out, we decided to compare it with another recent luxury contender, the Genesis GV80. Today, we're looking at two of the newer faces in the premium crossover world to see how they stack up. On one side, we’ve got the first-ever Mazda CX-70, which is basically a two-row version of the CX-90. On the other, we’ve got the Genesis GV80, originally launched by Hyundai’s luxury division back in 2021, now refreshed for 2025. There’s a bit of a price gap between these two, but they have a lot in common—both pack turbocharged six-cylinder engines, have head-turning looks inside and out, and come with full-time all-wheel drive. So, how do these two challengers fare against each other and the well-established competition in the ultra-competitive luxury crossover segment? Let’s find out.

Dear Mazda,
Please make a car that sells for $80, 000 to show all these so-called luxury brands what true luxury means.

I do not like your review because you down Mazda for build quality without justification. Build quality is not about options you do not like. Build quality refers to how well it is assembled and will last. Hyundai owns Genesis and their engines have had significant quality issues (mostly engine issues) in the past. Mazda has a new drive train in this model. So, overall, you do not yet know about build quality. I know that the assembly plant in Japan is top-notch. Do not know about the Genesis plant build quality. I prefer actual data on something like "build quality" rather than a subjective opinion not attached to any factual evidence showing this logical conclusion. Thank you.

CX70 Starts at 40k, there nothing not to like for the money.

To me the Hyundai isn’t 30k nicer. The screen is hideous and I believe the Mazda is more fun to drive and will have less problems over the time of ownership.

The gv80 may be more luxurious but the cx70 is more fun to drive. I buy a car for its driving abilities. I got a cx70 3 months ago this car is a steal. Its bigger gets better mileage and 20k less .

What's wrong with the Infotainment system in the Mazda. Most people will leave it in wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto

I know a family with the turbo premium in that nice red color, inside is extremely luxurious got it for 50 grand, he told me he considered a Lexus and Genesis but those were another 10-20 grand more

Even before we compare whether its luxury or not, the reliability, durability and the driving feel of mazda is unmatched by the korean genesis. Japanese technology vs korean technology

Liked the Mazda interior more. Maybe it's the colours that mislead me. The Genesis looked cold & clinical. Mazda warmer & snug in comparison.

Both great. I own the CX-70 with the H.O. engine. Has everything I wanted at the right pricepoint. 3rd mazda because I love Mazdas driving dynamics. My brother has a new escalade because he loves the finer things.

The wireless Apple/Android comes in the form of an Over The Air update.

The wireless phone projector works very well on the GV80, however, it was a recent OTU that requires pushing some buttons at the car to install, so maybe that one doesn't have it installed. Another thing is that you have to full disconnect the phone, and redo the connection wirelessly to get it work. After doing that, is great, responsive and works every single time. The best wireless connection that I have experience in any car.

Genesis is way up there, this is Apple vs banana comparison

The Mazda is understated. The Genesis is too much to your face. Both are working to be considered luxury.

I think it's a great comparison. Comparing car isnt just from a particular budget. There are people out there that wants to know how much it would cost in different brands to have these certain features. This is what I've been looking for. Well done!

Gv70 would be a fair comparison not gv80

Previous Genesis employee here. His comment about the 2.5 liter turbo engine that is available in the GV80 only being available in “base models” couldn’t be further from correct. You can have a roughly $74, 330 fully loaded GV80 with the 2.5 liter turbo engine in the “2.5 T Prestige AWD” trim and it is definitely not a “base model.” That would be the “Standard” or maybe the “Select” trim level.

We just looked at the CX90 and the Genises. We ended up getting another MDX A-spec this time. I really liked both. I do think the Genesis drove and felt like a Mercedes GLE.
The wife wanted another Acura MDX (her 3rd) But you really couldn’t go wrong with any of them….
