I still love that oldschool graphics drivers control panel layout.

That pen trick in the first few seconds is GENIUS! Never seen that before!

Thief 2 has fog in the mission "Life of the Party" right where you start which is on the rooftops. Press SHIFT-CTRL-ALT-END to skip to the level.

Awesome! Bought a brand new FX5500 a month ago for ~$28 Perfect for Windows 98SE. Very strong.

Very cool phil! I love the FX line for Windows 98 + DOS combo builds. Also interesting is the Quadro FX1100 AGP, which is effectively a GeForce FX5700 Ultra but can be had for much better prices.

I know you've covered it before but it would have been neat seeing a direct comparison to the FX5500 PCI version -- they can be useful for systems without an AGP slot.

Teasing a review of the Audigy 1 under 9x/DOS?
I would love that. And thanks for this cool vid too.

Two comments. First, with the overclocking, I was able to overclock an FX 5200 awhile back and saw a performance change. I think that was XP though. Secondly, I do believe nGlide uses DX9 shaders for translation. As we all know, the FX series DX9 shaders were terribly implemented. I believe older versions of nGlide or dgVoodoo can use DX7/8 translations. This might help improve performance. Good to see a classic retro video today!

Side-question-- I find myself wondering how you organize your boards and parts. How you store your motherboards, processors, and adapter cards. How do you keep them nice and undamaged and easy to find? That would probably be a great video! It's nice how dust-free and clean all your components are. Nice detail.

I still have my 5500 with 256mb from back in the day. Been using it on my retropc inspired by this great channel and it's loads of fun (oh the nostalgia).

I have done almost the exact same a few months ago. I installed Win 98 SE with the Unofficial SP3, upgraded to use 1 GB of RAM, and used the exact same GPU on a Pentium 4 system.

Great video!

These cards were quite bandwidth starved I believe. Perhaps a comparison video of the FX series at some point is a good idea? all the way from the lowly 5200 up to the 5950.

Fun seeing you return to Windows 98, i missed those videos. I got a 6800GT AGP waiting for me in the closet along with the VIA A8V motherboard you have.

But unfortunately while i got a great deal on the card it has the nv48 which is the later revision with the bridge chip. So i hope its going to play nice with the board and drivers once i get more parts to build a working time machine out of the parts i collected so far.

Patcher wise i had better luck with AutoPatcher than with the unofficial servicepack. Especially AutoPatcher 2008 is really nice. Despite it being older and slower the end result is a fantastic stable system complete with IE6, WMP9 and DX9C. Its how i found the hotfix for the 5710 that fixes its IDE issues since autopatcher contains that fix.

My Win98 "retro" PC was the one I actually used at the time: it was an Athlon 500, one of those which came in a cartridge, 512mb of RAM and a Voodoo 3 3000 AGPx8 video card. I loved playing games on this machine, they usually ran silky smooth. Actually, my old video card is still in my mom's house, maybe I'll even sell it for some good price, as it is a great card to use with retro PCs!

Times have changed when a decade ago getting something like a 5700 or a 5900 was really easy and demand was very low. Goodwill here in the states would have a healthy supply along with plenty of other agp cards to choose from then they changed everything up to appeal to the yuppies so almost everything goes to the scrap now. Still managed to snipe a socket 4 machine off them one morning when another customer walked in lol. For $5 it was a good deal for me :)

My only regret was not buying a boxed pair of socket 8 overdrives for $15 each but then again they would have been lost in an arson attack two years later.

Yoy have been my inspiration for getting back into games of my childhood. This video is very interesting, as I have ordered a PCI FX5500 for my Pentium 4 machine (has no AGP). I simply want this for late DOS games and windows 9x games that dont work with XP. I have a QX9650 with GTX 970 with XP on it, and a Pentium MMX 166Mhz laptop for early DOS. Think I am pretty much covered other than the fact I have no 3DFX card (and no room for one in PCs)

I love this episode because this gpu is the first gpu I could recognize as gpu. This gpu made me to upgrade to 7600 gs to play wow.

I feel so old. The FX series was my fourth video card purchase back in the day. I used it in 2003 to 2006.

I think my first PC had a 5500. It was a windows XP machine. I remember playing Halo at 20-30 FPS with some major dips on certain levels like the Covenant ships. Didn't stop me playing though.

What I do remember was my first upgrade was to whatever the last Nvidia AGP card was. I think it was a 8600. The difference was night and day. 60 fps on max settings, no problem.
